UPDATE!!! What time is it.... It's Rolex time!!!

I went down to south Florida in hopes that the recent winds and waves might of uncovered some old shipwreck stuff. Well, although I really didn't do well on the shipwreck stuff I did find this little piece. I took it to my jeweler friend this morning and he checked it out to make sure it was real. After inspecting it and testing the gold on it, he determined it's a Rolex 18k gold and stainless sub-mariner and it works pefectly. I'm so excited!!! I had never seen a Rolex let alone thought of owning one. He told me this watch goes for somewhere between 7 and 8 thousand bucks. I guess my hobby has paid for it's self. I'm planning on keeping it for myself because I always give away all my other stuff. Here are some pics.

I just added a picture of the watch after the new bezel insert and a cleaning (please excuse my thumb print, I didn't see it till after the cam was put away). My Jeweler said it should last me a lifetime with proper care. To bad it sits in my safe, but I will wear it out for those special nights.

It was found in the wet sand at close to 24 inches. I was just about to give up because it was so deep and I had decided that was the last scoop I was taking. Thankfully it was in that scoop. I doubt that I really would of gave up, but I know I would of rested. My excal has been modified for greater depth and it sure is paying off.

Good thing it wasn't 1000ft/300m deep or the waterproofing might have failed!!  ;D Gotta love Rolex! Excellent find!!

Re: What time is it... It's Rolex time!!!

I think I lost a Rolex down around where ever it was that you found that one.

Great find. I'm a little bit of a watch nut and you found a beaut. I believe that one had a Swiss made automatic movement. Were you able to unwind the crown and wind the watch? If not have you tried rotating the watch itself? Can you see the rotor through the back of the watch and does it move when you rotate the watch?

"Were you able to unwind the crown and wind the watch? If not have you tried rotating the watch itself? Can you see the rotor through the back of the watch and does it move when you rotate the watch?"

Question. Were you able to unwind the crown and wind the watch?
Answer. Yes I did unwind the crown and was able to set the watch.

Question. Can you see the rotor through the back of the watch and does it move when you rotate the watch?"
Answer. I'm not sure what you mean, but the jeweler that checked it out said it was the real thing and working perfectly.

I'm not certain, but I thought that model had a sapphire crystal on the back of the watch (like the sapphire crystal on the front. It's referred to as an "exhibition back".) that lets you look into the watch and see the gears and a thing that looks like a half moon. When that thing moves, it winds the watch. That particular one should wind it when it moves either clockwise or counter clockwise. It's Rolex's version of a Swiss ETA 2824-2 automatic movement.

Re: What time is it.... It's Rolex time!!!

I've heard of that back style. This one in particular didn't have that option. I pulled the serial numbers on the rolex web site and it didn't show that option. But, you're not far off. There were similar ones that did have that.

It's good that you took it to your jeweler, too. There's a lot of fake Rolex's circulating around. Did you get an estimate on what it would cost to get it reconditioned? If the seal on the back stayed intact, the inside of the watch should be dry. If you don't have any condensation on the inside of the crystal, I think you're going to be OK.

Re: What time is it.... It's Rolex time!!!

The inside of the watch was never compromised at all and although it didn't work at first it did start to work after being in my pouch for a while. He said he could clean it and do it all for under 500. I trust his judgement because I've known him for a long time through the Masonic lodge.
