IT IS THE REAL DEAL!!!!Took it to the coin shop today and they said it is geniune. With the eyelet and the "amount of wear" it ruined the value of it as a "coin". I asked about removing the eye and the guy got cocky and said that it wouldn`t matter because of the wear. Ole lady wouldn`t let me argue so we left. BUT WE LEFT HAPPY!!! Hit the jeweler on the way home and it weighs 4.2 grams. Oh, the coin shop said they would gladly pay me (said it 3 times) $67.00 for the price of the gold. We said NO THANKS!!
heres 2 pics--does it look worn??Looks real nice to me!!! ;Dhhbob

Yes, it is heavily worn for a gold coin and damaged to boot. The offer was probably not out of line, but what a fantastic find! Any gold coin that has been made into jewelry will lose most collector value, but priceless to a detectorist!

I'm so happy to hear it's real! Good for you!

Gold coins turn up in the most unexpected places. I was detecting South Beach Miami a few years back and I ran into another detector guy.

He had a beer in one hand and a huge smile on his face. We talked for a few minutes and he showed me the same exact 2 1/2 dollar gold coin he had found earlier that day under a pier.

His coin was slabbed in plastic. He figured there must have been a coin show in town or something and it fell out of someones pocket.

Who cares where it came from! You should be grinning from ear to ear with that find. ;)

I love this hobby!

Unless you need the dough dont sell it. :) Wear it. Someday you may be saying "My FIRST gold coin". ;D You can always sell it later. Gold should be increasing in value for several years. Good luck,Ron

Nice going, Trapper Bob!

Don't forget to enter in Western & Eastern Treasures' "Best Finds of 2007."

That little beauty is a sure ticket to the Gold Coin Club!

a find like that I think I would hang that around my neck and wear it also, it would be a great conversation piece ! congrats on your find !

The wear patterns on those is different from other coins because the design is inset into the surface (which they discontinued because of public outcry--and not so hard to imagine why after the influenza pandemic!--that disease might get "caught" in the recesses of the coin). This is total fallacy, by the way. Anyhow, it is worn, and it is damaged by the loop. I'd wear it with pride! Besides...you aren't going to get a lot of money from any gold coin you find. They are difficult to find (which is why they are seen as a "holy grail" of detecting), but you certainly won't be turning a huge profit if you decide to sell them. Relics and high-grade silver coins bring more dough.

Cheers!

Take it to an honest jeweler and have the ring taken off. There isn't a darned thing wrong with that coin.
You should have told that guy he didn't know what he was taking about.
