IT IS THE REAL DEAL!!!!Took it to the coin shop today and they said it is geniune. With the eyelet and the "amount of wear" it ruined the value of it as a "coin". I asked about removing the eye and the guy got cocky and said that it wouldn`t matter because of the wear. Ole lady wouldn`t let me argue so we left. BUT WE LEFT HAPPY!!! Hit the jeweler on the way home and it weighs 4.2 grams. Oh, the coin shop said they would gladly pay me (said it 3 times) $67.00 for the price of the gold. We said NO THANKS!!
heres 2 pics--does it look worn??Looks real nice to me!!! ;Dhhbob

Beautiful!! Yep, I agree with Contractorrod; that guy wanted it for himself.

Wow, that is one Magnificent Find. I have been detecting for over 23 years and I have never found a Gold coin yet. You are one lucky guy.

Congratulations and if I were you I would never sell that coin. I would get a really nice necklace to put it on and maybe wear it.

Worn? Yeah, WORN around my neck would be fine with me. ;D
That is such a GREAT find. Can't wait to find a gold piece like that.
Be proud of that find.

You should get an appraisal from a reputable dealer. Then write a nasty letter to your local paper, outlining his attempt to take advantage of you. You might save some poor unsuspecting person a fate like he intended to put on you. Bongo

i would imagine the headress feathers would be more pronounced,,,, i would still be doing the happy dance everywhere i went..... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

they wanted it nice find

WOW :o

I'd keep that one forever!

Beautiful looking "coin" I think the dealer just was hoping you would take nothing for it , and he would have scored, ya the eye on the coin does takeaway from the fact of coin for collection but put a nice gold chain on it and it may be worth more than as from a coin ;D

Congrats again you two!! Woooohoooo!
Get a brazed closed gold ringlet put that baby on a chain and wear it proudly,
your gold coin trophy!!

I think what the jeweler was talking about is that when the ring was soldered onto the edge, the heat and blending of the solder and gold more than likely did damage the coin in some way, slight pitting, etc, but, it's one of the most beatiful coins I have seen in a long time and it would sell on eBay for at least twice what he offered I bet. It's always a good thing to make buddies with a local jeweler, but this guy doesn't sound like friend material.

Way to go!!! Great find!!!!!

Smiles!

You did the right thing by refusing that offer, and now you also know that dealer won't be getting any of your business in the future. It amazes me why some dealers work that way. Not only have they lost a potential long term customer, they may loose other customers now just by word of mouth. I'm sure you wont be recommending him to anyone you know.

I had a dealer offer me $18.00 for a 1919 Walking Liberty Half that will definitely grade out between VF and XF (approx. value $250 - $500 )
That was my first and last visit to that coin shop. He tried to tell me that since it was found in the ground , it would never be worth much. If he had been honest with me from the start, he would have had a steady customer.

THIS IS WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO BECOME A STUDENT OF COINS(key dates & conditions), as well as jewlery and other collectibles. Ask alot of questions on these forums and get your answers from experienced members.

Congrats!!!! On your first gold coin! HH ME in WV ( 33 yrs. and still searching for my first gold coin)

Well at least you find out something........that is not where you want a place you want on honest opinion from. That coin is absolutely awesome and would have it next to me like a western gun shooter with their revolver!!!

What a find, once in a life time find my man!!!!!!

Great find, that's for sure!

I guess I will play devil’s advocate here, and agree with the coin dealer. Your jewelry grade coin does exhibited quite a bit of wear. That and the bezel really move this guy down on the numismatic ladder. AU coins of this type and date bring about $160 or so.

That said, how much do you think a Coin Dealer will be able to sell that now jewelry grade gold coin for? I’m sure the guy has overhead, rent and such. I doubt very seriously he “low balled” you so he could keep it.

Nevertheless, I agree with the others…keep it…enjoy it…wear it

Agreed....I would just keep it! It's value as a coin is shot because someone made it into jewelry. Great Find!!!!!!!!!!!

Although the monitary value is an important factor, I would be more proud to have it in my collection for the artistic and historical value.... priceless!!

Well, let's see here...

Very Fine 20: Hair cord knot distinct. Feathers at top of head clear. Cheekbone worn.

Extra Fine 40: Cheekbone, war bonnet and headband feathers slightly worn.

Almost Uncirculated 50: Trace wear on the cheekbone and headdress.

Most current values: VF:$175 EF: $220 AU: $230

Like I said in your original post, remove the loop (professionally) and it's worth a couple hundred bucks.

Unfortunately, like every other business, there are crooks trying to steal from the unsuspecting. But at least he confirmed it was real. And I am really glad you shared it with us first, so you got some worthy advise and did not fall for his scam.

By the way, my opinion of the condition, for what it's worth, would be between VF 20 and EF 40 which would be "choice very fine 30" with a retail value of $200, a whole sale value of $100 and melt value of $80.

Once again, congrats on the great find to the Mrs's.

Oh yeah, and your wife smokin ya with the find......priceless.

That is one great find, Congrats

well I will offer you $100 bucks right now.... but i wouldnt sell it to me. i would post it on ebay. you will get at least $200. I am almost willing to put money on it.
but heck. what price could you put on your first gold coin. "priceless"
ever since i saw that same coin someone found a while back "2.5 gold" I fell in love. i would buy one if i could find one for under a hundred bucks.

wtg man...errr. i mean, man's wife. lol
