In this second pic are my finds today.Don't know what the top item is ?! I wonder if anyone can put a date on that buckle

Dan,I brought that damn wheat penny home today.I don't have enough interest in it right now to rub the dirt off to see the date :-)

I found this new homestead just this evening as it started to get dark in the woods.I'm lucky I was able to this pic with it's relatively good sharpness. I have quite a bit of experience with Photoshop so if I can get it half way sharp and exposed half decent I can usually make up for any other problems with the photo. At first I thought it was a springhouse but don't think so although it was directly above the spring.Half of it is below ground level with that lower window almost at ground level.
Interesting enough the house foundation was directly above the spring and this structure by about 8 yards. I later found a well about 15 yards below this root cellar and off to the left. My only find here so far is a wheat penny, bummer. I left it lay on a stone of the root cellar.I found it between two of the rocks in the lower left portion of this photo.
Beautiful location in open woods, very little weeds but steamy hot this evening.

Just curious. Why did you leave the wheat penny there?

Hi Dr Ace,it might sound awful to some but a wheatie means nothing to me,I have just a little interest in indian head pennies,I've found quite a few of them. Now flying eagle and large cents is a different story, those are a great find to me.

Re: Root cellar at a newly discovered homestead

Definatly a cool looking spot. Pretty wild how diffrent the stone work is from the east part of our state. 90 percent of the stone structures in Chester county PA are field stone and are not "cut" stone. That does look like some of England's structures the way the stones are cut. Is that common in your area?

hi Brian, yes this is quite common around here and in various scales of building.Check out one of my galleries to see more cut stone.

Love the photo's! Wanted to produce a Farm book of my area for years. Yeah, a lot of the rail/car bridges ARE cut stone now that I think about it. Just not the homes and such.

yes,I guess you were talking on a small "home" scale, sorry. Many, many of the old foundations have cut stone. I wonder how long it took to do that on a small scale with just a few people (one?) doing it.I guess they had a lot of patience and time to do it.

Re: Root cellar at a newly discovered homestead

I got a couple of questions for any one that might want to take a stab at it. Would the cracks in the stones be sealed up somehow in a root cellar like this ? Also on the lower side, would there be wooden shutters there and/or a glass window, screen ?

Re: Root cellar at a newly discovered homestead

Pa Billy, beautiful photo of your new site, but also your photo album is beautiful as well.. Thank you for sharing..

Re: Root cellar at a newly discovered homestead

Sweet looking spot you got there. I really enjoyed your pictures particularly the railroad bridges,Im a really big fan of the rail if you wanna see some trains http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,50915.0.html
I know for a fact that every single one of those bridges had at least one camp very near or usually just beside it,maybe you have hunted some of them? I would love to get a look at the PRR lock that you found Pennsy and UP are my favorite lines The Pennsylvania had a rail that ran a couple of miles from where I live, happy hunting...Shoot

Hi Shootist, great collection there ! That's really cool how you have the trains tunneling through the walls ! Here's a pic of that PRR lock that I found in an old coal mining ghost town. It's a heavy one made out of brass.
I never thought about camps being around RR building enterprises.I've done research into the history of this RR and it was completed in 1853. I'll have to ask around about possible camp locations. Thanks again for showing me your collection!

Re: Root cellar at a newly discovered homestead

Pa Billy,
Thanks for the photos. That's a nice looking site and like you said the weeds don't seem very bad at all.
Here's a photo of a foundation I hiked into about a month ago. Beautiful stone work. There's quite a few foundations, but the weeds were horrible, not much ground to hunt. Found only two wheat pennies.

Re: Root cellar at a newly discovered homestead

Billy,

Great photo of the cellar. I agree, it does have a medieval appearance. There should be lots of relics around the house. Just be careful for snakes.

Tried to look at your smugmug site, but it is down for maintenance.

Hi Matt, interesting looking site there. It looks like you have some hope of swinging a detector there in the late fall. What's really bad is things like berry bushes and those nasty rose type bushes with their hooked barbs that don't die off over the winter.

Re: Root cellar at a newly discovered homestead

Billy, what an incredible looking site! That stonework is fabulous! I hear you on the wheats, but what was the date?

Re: Root cellar at a newly discovered homestead

Looks like a great site to hunt. I wish you the best and be careful. HH Terry and keep us all posted on the goodies.

Hi halfdime, yeah I guess I should have looked at the date.I tried a little but couldn't rub it clean enough to see it. I l always find the most common dates with 80 zillion minted :-) I hope to return there tomorrow morning if everything goes as planned.

Re: Root cellar at a newly discovered homestead

Billy,

The root cellars I have been in have mostly been dug ones (no stone, framed doorway) a few stone ones that I have seen had nothing in between he stones. Also, I have never seen a root cellar with windows or shutters?
