I found this tag in a small town called Lowrys, SC. I have not been able to figure out what it is. It has a name, the man's social security number and the location of Turners Station, Maryland engraved on it. The back is blank (no marks of any kind). I have been able to determine that the number is an actual social security number issued in Maryland around the mid to late 1930's ( when social security numbers were first being issued in this country). I did find out that the social security board never issued any metal social security tags. It is a copper alloy metal, is oval shaped and is approximately 6cm x 2 cm. That may be from one of those machines that engrave anything you want it to.

The social security number was issued in Maryland, sometime between 1936-1950. The person might still be alive..........

Perhaps, it was a way for the man to remember his SSN before we all got used to memorizing it? Just a thought.

An identity tag for his luggage?

If you are looking to return it to him/family, try the local library or historical society. They may have city directories/phone books, or someone who knows everyone in the area. I gave Ancestry and Family Search a stab, but can't search the Social Security Death Index by number. I doubt that your local SS office would give you his contact info, but they might pass on a message to him, or help you in some way, if you brought in the tag to show them.
Always cool to have an item that directly ties to a specific person!! :icon_thumleft:
