You would think a Sotheby's jewelry expert would recognize a piece made by the Neiger Brothers. The fact that they didn't identify it as such could be due to it NOT being a Neiger Brothers piece.
Agreed. Apparently it is difficult to attribute a piece to the Neiger Bros. with 100% certainty because a.) they didn't mark their work, and b.) with their success, other local jewelry makers began to emulate their work. Maybe I expected too much from the appraisal company? I used them as a last resort, and more than even a valuation, I wanted a 'lead' - a name like Neiger, or a style, even a keyword I hadn't thought of - so I could do additional research. I guess that is why I was disappointed with their lame response. They basically reworded the description I included with the photos I sent them, and typed in right back to me.
