Maybe the backmark is Boylan & Co? My book says "New York City 1880s-90s Military" for that maker.

It's looking close barring the distances between the star and the B and N. But the font, if you compare those B's, is very close. Is that a crudely carved E following the B in the mystery button? That's where I get most lost.

Possibly * BEST & CO. * New York, introduced around 1885, the mark of clothing dealer Albert Best.

(This may or may not be the same Best & Co.— a.k.a. Beco Industries— which is today a firm specializing in children's clothing.)

I think there is no doubt that PBK nailed the backmark back in 2008, the entire visible letters and stars match Best & Co. New York. Just a shame that does not help id what 2 headed eagle represents on this button, but for era, it is late 1800s (Tice - Dating Buttons)
(So the button is American and not a foreign type. and two headed eagles were used as what I showed in an earlier post)

I'm leaning toward Best & Co, as well. I also like the Masonic theories. Those Masons love two headed eagles.

you would see a two headed "masonic" eagle === on a 32nd degree scottish rite item --- my pop was a past master of the local "masonic" lodge

the sheild design * is odd however for a masonic item ===looks similar to ones used during the civil war type era to me. -- maybe a mixture -- civil war era type sheild with a masonic two headed eagle --- my dads "fez" was made in new york by the way --as is /was a lot of masonic items over the years.

Don, I like your theory about this being an SC button. I would love to find a match somewhere though...
