The double-headed eagle is a symbol of Austria, Russia, and Prussia. I can't find anything like that with the American symbolism, ie stars and stripes, arrows and olive branch.

There were foreign volunteers in the Civil War that fought mostly for the Union, from Poland and Germany. Could this have been a button from one of those regiments?

You're correct about the button's elements... I cant get anywhere with them either. It seems to me an American military "motif" button until the double heads... :-\

I've been surfing online for a few days now looking... with negtative results.

I'm leaning toward a civilian blazer/coat button with military motif. 1850 - 1900 based on condition.

Would like to know what the back looks like... are there any words or letters as a back mark? If so - this will help date it, and possibly put it in a better context for an ID.

Anyone got a copy of The National Button Bulletin,1997, Vol. 56, No. 4? An online list of contents cites," An American Double-headed Eagle Button." That might be worth checking out.

the two headed eaagle was popular with the austrian / hungry group --thus the two heads -one crown theme (is there a crown?--cuz I don't see one) -- the russian royals also used the design -- both the russians royals (via the communist revolt) and the austrain / hungry empire went down and out at the end of WW 1 --- austria / hungry for supporting the german side ---- the symbol was commonly used up till then

soon as i can figure out how to resize the photo I'll post the back of this button... I'm not very good with computers...

Creeper... Lemme help you out. (assuming you have microsoft windows)

1. Open the file using the program "Microsoft Paint"
2. Select "Image" from the top, and then select "Stretch/Skew"
3. Resize your picture by changing the size percentage for "stretch"...
4. Save your picture as a .jpg file, and try posting it again.

It looks like Berk, but I don't think that's it. It may be " _ E E _ _".

Creeper, can you take a closer look at the other word and see if you can come up with anything?

Possibly * BEST & CO. * New York, introduced around 1885, the mark of clothing dealer Albert Best.

(This may or may not be the same Best & Co.— a.k.a. Beco Industries— which is today a firm specializing in children's clothing.)

I sent an email to the National Button Society requesting some assistance. Hopefully I will hear back from them soon.

I remember on another forum a month or so ago, someone posted a button and it was said, that they never saw one with only ONE head before and I ID'd it as a American Naval button, now what was funny to me was they called it a South Carolina Naval button, I think Naval, but what was interesting they said (those who responded to the post) that they only saw the SC Naval button with TWO HEADS. So, there is Two Head American Eagle buttons out there according to those guys, but I have not found the post nor am I sure that it was Naval, but I do know it was military.

Now the button I ID'd had one head, but supposingly has to do with SC..............I did not agree with the replies.
