I went back to my Union camp yesterday and found this. I was looking through some books and it resembles an iron candle stick holder but I don't know. Any help here. I've attached 3 photos. candle01.JPGCandle top.JPGcandle bottom.JPG

I've never seen one quite exactly like it. But the lipped top (and particularly important, its size) is the same as on the versions I've seen, and you dug it in a civil war army encampment, so I think your guess of candleholder is correct.

I'm curious. I want to learn.
Is this object a previously recognized candle stick holder?
I look at the thickness of the apparently cast iron, with what looks like a smallish core, its conical shape, and have to ask, was it meant to be hand held, or what was it likely attached to?

I think what you MAY have found is not a candlestick...

But actually a "snuffer"... this larger style is often referred to as a "witches hat".
