Just cleaned up these two rings found in an old "maritime" area;

At first I though it was mud and soil in the outside grove but it was actually old fibers (meaning cloth?)
So I wonder if there was any sort of maritime use for this - they kind of remind me of the eyelets you'd get in a modern day tarp!

The internal "teeth" are slightly sharpened so it looks like they may have been "clamped" closed on some material?

I only say maritime use due to the history of the site - they could be curtain rings for all I know!!!

Looking closer, I think they are Brass??

I know very little about the days of wooden ships and iron men, but it seems to me there is a distinct possibility they could have use something like that, although I think the "clew lines" were sewn onto the sails, and any eyes in the sail corners etc. were also sewn, using reenforced canvass, and stitching around the eyes. But if they were using canvass to cover something, then possibly grommets like your find. I think the key would be to find out when that type of attachment was used, because like you said, grommets are still in use today.
