Went to an 1860's farm house yesterday with my XLT. Had it set on my program for clean areas - lots of settings turned up. I start at the house but the dogs were inside and got upset so I stayed about 20 feet from the building. The owners were gone. I was getting way too much noise and only found a 51-d and two memorial pennies. After 30 minutes, I switched to the factory "coin" program but turned up the preamp gain from "2" to "6". Much easier on the ears. The owners got home and a moved to an area farther from the house near the parking. Finally got a signal, dime/penny to quarter range, but hard to pinpoint. An inch below my plug (total 3 inches down) was the half - my first . On scanning the hole - another signal. And this repeated with each find. Total = 42,42,48,23 dimes. The half. 44,44,44-d, pennies, 43-p nickel - my first silver nickel .
Went a little longer and got the '36 dime. I'll be back there this afternoon! problem is they have a fenced area in part of the yard as a dog run - access only from the house - and lots of dog crap - so I will skip that area.
