Trench on Beach Produces Silver

Went to the beach last Sunday looking for Diggummup. I couldn't find him, but I noticed they were digging a trench on the beach next to the boardwalk. They were putting in pipes for showers and lights, I guess, and a footing for a new wall. I hate finding clad, so I jumped in, hoping for something old. About a half hour produced one silver 1946 dime, a 1962 zip top.

A couple days later, I decided to go back at nite and try again when the workers were gone. In about an hour, I found 4 quarters, 10 silver dimes, and wheat pennies! ;D I was finding silver on every third hit! Not bad for an easy digging beach. This is the way MDing should always be, (I thought to myself.) I worked til it got dark. I wished the Ace 250 had a lit up screen.

I came back the next night, armed with a flashlight and camera, hoping to finish the job. I was too late. The trench was partially filled in. The next few hours produced only pennies and modern trash. :(

I went back last nite and worked the piles, but only found pennies. :(
Well here are the pics I took after the ditch was partially filled and my coins. It is obviously not a great find, but Ill take it. :) ;D

Wow great beach finds. You don't usually get to pull oldies from the beach too often. The Ace 250 is a great detector too :)

I will have to study the Florida Isolated Finds Law. No one is able to tell me if I have broken it by not yet reporting these insignificant 50 year old finds. I, of course, do not want to break any laws. I will of course comply. They/we do not condone breaking any laws here on TN.

Re: Trench on Beach Produces Silver

wow this thread has taking a weird turn ???

Re: Trench on Beach Produces Silver

I just moved from Florida 4 months ago. I went to a park one day to detect, and was promptly told by the "powerful ranger" that I couldn't do that there. It surely soured me on detecting after that,,,,I am Glad Idaho has friendly rangers 8)

Bigcypress,, if I remember right, I think Florida enacted a law recently that permits you to shoot someone on your own property if they pose a hazard to you or your property...... keep a gun at your bedside, and don't worry about your "yard sale finds" :)

I am not really worried about it or my yard sale finds, but did I not just confess to breaking Florida law in this thread? Then again, I could have made it all up. I am only curious to how this Isolated Finds Law will be enforced, and how it will affect the future of our hobby of Metal Detecting. My insignificant finds have no archeological value and I am sure the State is not interested in me and my dimes, but they ARE interested in bigger fish and I believe are monitoring MDing forums and e-Bay and are making cases!

As far as the new Florida gun laws go, yes, a citizen can now shoot someone that is on their property or in their car. I do not think this applies to relatives. ;) :D Sorry...bad joke.

Re: Trench on Beach Produces Silver

Went back to Hollywood Beach today and searched around old parking meters but couldnt pinpoint anything with all the trash. I decided for easy digging to hit the trench piles again and here are todays finds. I believe I have a silver quarter, a brass token, and what Im hoping is an old military button (bottom). I need to clean. Also a rusted clump.(top left)

Re: Trench on Beach Produces Silver

My button and other finds are soaking in distilled water to remove the salt. I am still hoping the button is military. It appears to be silver or pewter with a steel back. Picking with a toothpick reveals the letters "SPEOTEMUR AGENQO" ???

Re: Trench on Beach Produces Silver

I did a google search and came up with one match of "SPEOTEMUR AGENDO"in the Lee-Jackson Militaria site. It is not as old as I had hoped. It may be from a WWII United States JewishWar Veteran dress jacket. 1950ish. I wonder what the words mean? Scroll down second uniform.

Nice finds!

That salt sure does a number on coins though - would like to see them after they're cleaned - good luck,

Re: Trench on Beach Produces Silver

Went back to the beach last nite (parking free after 6 pm). I have been digging mostly good belltones up til now. I decided to dig all pulltab signals to see what gold I missed, and guess what I found?---

A bunch of pulltabs! :D (Also two wheats).

Re: Trench on Beach Produces Silver

They say an area is never hunted out, so lured by easy beach digging, I went back last night and found a small silver British? coin marked "GEORGIVIS V DEI GRA"(dime is for size) and a copper token that says "NO CASH VALUE" on the back.
The bottom pic shows some the brass rivets, snaps, and other small items that the Ace 250 "Dime-Blaster" found.
