The hobby of metal detecting can be down right crazy. You can never ( and I mean never) predict what's going to pop out of the ground. Today's hunt out in the woods is a great case in point. After about 90 minutes of climbing through pricker bushes, and up and down a variety of hills I had little to show for my efforts:
So then I'm walking along a little used trail next to a swamp, and pull off to the side to swing over a small clearing:
I hit on a solid "92" VDI using a slightly modified " Fast" program on my Deus II. I'm thinking "dime"...maybe even a silver dime. But the signal sounded too big for a dime. I decided to be careful digging, just in case it was something good. But it wasn't...it was something great! At the depth of about 6-7 inches, out pops a 1879 Morgan silver dollar. I was flabbergasted!
I have never found a silver dollar, and I don't expect to find another. They produced 14.8 million of these coins. Each one weighs 26.7 grams and is composed of 90 % silver, 10 % copper. I'm very surprised that my coin had such a low VDI. Maybe that has to do with the partial copper content. This beauty is in very nice condition, and cleaned up reasonably well.
Thanks for having a look. Good hunting to all! Cheers!!
