The hobby of metal detecting can be down right crazy. You can never ( and I mean never) predict what's going to pop out of the ground. Today's hunt out in the woods is a great case in point. After about 90 minutes of climbing through pricker bushes, and up and down a variety of hills I had little to show for my efforts:

So then I'm walking along a little used trail next to a swamp, and pull off to the side to swing over a small clearing:

I hit on a solid "92" VDI using a slightly modified " Fast" program on my Deus II. I'm thinking "dime"...maybe even a silver dime. But the signal sounded too big for a dime. I decided to be careful digging, just in case it was something good. But it wasn't...it was something great! At the depth of about 6-7 inches, out pops a 1879 Morgan silver dollar. I was flabbergasted!

I have never found a silver dollar, and I don't expect to find another. They produced 14.8 million of these coins. Each one weighs 26.7 grams and is composed of 90 % silver, 10 % copper. I'm very surprised that my coin had such a low VDI. Maybe that has to do with the partial copper content. This beauty is in very nice condition, and cleaned up reasonably well.

Thanks for having a look. Good hunting to all! Cheers!!

Congrats on that great coin. Don't sell yourself short, by thinking you probably wont find another. I found my first one in a field, and 5 years later, found 2 more about 10 minutes apart in a different field. They are out there. Good luck on finding your next one.

Thanks to everyone for your great comments. I've returned to that same general spot over the past couple of days with only an IHP to show for my efforts. Oh well....the Morgan dollar will no doubt be the highlight for my entire 2024 season. Happy Hunting All!

I consider any silver dollar find in the wild a BANNER FIND.. because they are almost impossible to find outside a cache..
As for the VDI numbers, did you see what they were after you dug it of the ground ? Many times a target will read lower in the ground than out...

Very very nice Silvermonkey ! In almost 40 years detecting (also here in Eastern Massachusetts) I've never dug a SILVER dollar; An Ike, a Sacagewea and Presidential "gold colored" dollars, yes, but never silver. The best I could do in the woods yesterday was a worn Standing Liberty Quarter.

Wow that is one sweet looking silver dollar. Congrats. I'm still looking for my first silver dollar.

That is one thing I love about this hobby, you never know when and where something great will be dug up.

Thanks TORRERO! Honestly, I was so excited when that coin popped out, I didn't think to re-scan it. I'll give that a go and let you know what numbers come up. Cheers!

You know if I had that signal, it would have been a washer! Seriously, great recovery and a sweet looking coin!

Very nice find. I only found one silver dollar in all my years detecting, and it was an Ike Dollar, no silver for me. Congrats.
