I think I'm finally getting the hang of this detecting lark :laughing7:

Dad & I went out today expecting a few Roman Coins as I had decided to carry on from where I had the Roman Silver last week. On the very first run after 5 minutes & 3 digs into the hunt, out pops a Silver Ingot. I look at it & immediately think Viking, but hold on a second we are on the edge of a Roman site :icon_scratch: So I begin convincing myself it must be Roman but might be Viking :dontknow: After some quick research I found the following:
http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/258765

So I'm 99% sure I have my first Viking circa 1000AD Silver Ingot, often melted down from Saxon plunder & then traded in handy sized ingots :read2: These are considered Rare & was on my impossible list but there it was with no other Saxon/Viking age items on the edge of a Roman Site. ::)

We carried on for 1 hour with no other finds, so moved to the field next door & got the following:

Large Roman Lead Steelyard Weight
Broken Roman Bronze Bracelet
Broken Silver Hammered of Ed I
7 Roman Bronze coins, 1 we need - Ses. of Gordian III AD240

Thanks again for all the comments.

Its another hard to beat find :tongue3: But I will keep trying :icon_thumright:

UPDATE:

Seem to have caused a bit of excitement amongst the Archaeologist's & Museum service & they we keen to pick it up & take a look. Never had an email at 0700am saying they will be around the house tomorrow to pick it up, normally we have issues getting it to them. :laughing9:

Looks very likely a Museum will acquire this one & it's not going to be returned. If so it will be my first Treasure not to be, but it will be its best home - studied with other examples. :headbang:

Yeah, it does only have a "melt" value of £14.22 ::)

Bloody typical, I order a skip and start clearing the garden, three days now, occasionally stopping for a beer and a sandwhich. In the evenings, before I fall asleep in front of the tv, with a pint or two of the local brew , I have a quick look at Tnet to see if any new stuff has hit the banner and I missed this one completely :icon_scratch:, sorry mate :tongue3:. That is one impressive find, and as you said, super rare. Here are a couple of links so other members can see what an archeologicaly valuable contribution this find is

Its not so much them that have the knowledge, it's the Museum who study them say the following:
'Thank you for letting us know about this an exciting discovery, which is much appreciated. We have been very active in acquiring and studying ingots like this in recent years, and it is good also that this is a place deleted find.'
The subject title of the email being 'Viking Ingot'

Don't understand why this fantastic, rare and interesting - around 1000 year old viking silver ingot, is not up on the banner? ??? It's as good and is at least as significant as anything up there. Nuggy

Thanks for the support, it really matters not, I think most people get the significance & I'll live to fight another day. Had my fair share & some, maybe it needs to be a Gold Coin, although I'm trying so hard for one I think its going to be another blank year

But thats detecting, I never expected this & thats whats great about the hobby. Who knows what else maybe around the corner :headbang:

You gotta know it's a great find when the archeologists come to you to take it off your hands. :notworthy:
Don't be sad, it will be on display where people will be in awe of it.
I nominated it for banner, but if it doesn't make it, just know that it should have.

Although they offered, I think Dad will drop it off tomorrow whilst recording some other items.
Not sure if they will display it, but it will contribute to the greater knowledge of these, & I have no problem with them wanting/keeping it. That's the Law & we do whats best for everyone involved, the teams reputation is built on this honesty, without it we are nothing. Good word spreads, bad word spreads faster :icon_thumright: (we got this land because of the Night Hawkers, the owner took our word & our trust that we would show them what was on their land - like all our farmers)

WOW! Great finds and interesting discussion and history! Thanks for sharing all this. I'm even excited for you. Congratulations!

Thanks, welcome to Tnet :hello:

As we are just over half way into the year & below target on most coins/artefact's, Dad & I need to get a wriggle on & finish the year strong

But this makes for a year to remember, 2 Viking Coins & an Ingot, that won't happen again :o

:icon_thumleft: Super Cool Finds!! They are loaded with history. Congrats! Now if I could only find something like that on this side of the pond. I'll just keep on diggin. Diggin Dan :icon_thumright:

Jeff, the further update;

The head of the archaeological unit has said “Yes this looks like a Viking ingot.” And they will be retaining it for forwarding to the British Museum and professional detailed investigation.

We will now have a long wait whilst it goes through the Treasure Act process and Coroner’s court.
