I think I'm finally getting the hang of this detecting lark :laughing7:

Dad & I went out today expecting a few Roman Coins as I had decided to carry on from where I had the Roman Silver last week. On the very first run after 5 minutes & 3 digs into the hunt, out pops a Silver Ingot. I look at it & immediately think Viking, but hold on a second we are on the edge of a Roman site :icon_scratch: So I begin convincing myself it must be Roman but might be Viking :dontknow: After some quick research I found the following:
http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/258765

So I'm 99% sure I have my first Viking circa 1000AD Silver Ingot, often melted down from Saxon plunder & then traded in handy sized ingots :read2: These are considered Rare & was on my impossible list but there it was with no other Saxon/Viking age items on the edge of a Roman Site. ::)

We carried on for 1 hour with no other finds, so moved to the field next door & got the following:

Large Roman Lead Steelyard Weight
Broken Roman Bronze Bracelet
Broken Silver Hammered of Ed I
7 Roman Bronze coins, 1 we need - Ses. of Gordian III AD240

Re: TREASURE - RARE VIKING SILVER INGOT...

Three letters. . . WOW!!

What an exceptional recovery

After you recovered this piece, I would imagine that there were a "few" ::) things racing through
your mind. . . furrow patterns, target depth, part of a cache, etc. . . how do you compose yourself after
such an amazing recovery? Do you have a mental "check list" designed to ground your excitement after a find?
There have been several instances when I've had to say out loud to myself after a nice recovery to
"re-check the hole" and sure enough, there was something else that I would have missed.

Anyway, one of the nicest (of many) recoveries I've seen you make

Banner mate!

Re: TREASURE - RARE VIKING SILVER INGOT...

Outstanding Cru, What a unique piece of history. Banner for sure.

Gets me thinking though - why is it there all on it's own? Dropped, maybe - stashed all alone, unlikely - could be any manner of reasons, but I would be tempted to have a bit of a go over around that spot with my biggest coil. Nuggy

Re: TREASURE - RARE VIKING SILVER INGOT...

This ingot is much bigger than the ONLY OTHER RECORDED AT THE BRITISH MUSEUM !!!
Lifetime find. Banner vote.! :hello2:

Re: TREASURE - RARE VIKING SILVER INGOT...

Congrats "Crusader" :hello2: BANNER !!! :icon_thumleft:

Re: TREASURE - RARE VIKING SILVER INGOT...

After looking closely at you ingot, I am sure it is the one that was lost in May of 962 AD by my Viking ancestor 'SilverheadThorvald'.
Its shape and weight leave no doubt, Please inform the British museum that I'll be happy to cover the cost of shipping, I'm sure you'll get an 'Honorable Mention'
for its return..... :laughing9: :hello:
Congratulations on another 'Better than the Example' Find

That is true, its very hard because even with the 15,000+ acres we have permission for, we don't know of any Saxon or Viking Sites. This ingot like the 2 coins I have had this year (now named 'the year of the Viking') all came from different fields miles apart & with no other finds from that period. Therefore very difficult to explain how or way they got there. :dontknow:
One possibility that jumps to mine is a lose whilst out horse riding. :dontknow:

(hopefully answers Nuggy's question, although not very well)

THANKS FOR ALL THE OTHER COMMENTS.
