Ok, everyone,

I found this iron "thing" burried about a foot + under the sand at a local beach in San Luis Obispo. I know there are stories of treasures etc. around here. What I exposed is about 2 feet long, almost a foot across and on the side it's at last 6 or so inches showing. I did not have the time or tools to dig it fully. It is more covered than uncovered and has to weigh hundreds of pounds. There seem to be grooved slots over the top of it. Maybe for rope? Is this a piece of an old ship? The end of it is flat, the top has the rounded grooves. What the heck is it? Did I leave my retirement fund buried at the beach? It would be quite a job even moving it if it wasn't buried over a foot down. Its pretty much near the water so it was probably exposed years ago before it got covered by sand. UNLESS it was purposely buried. It is pretty much aiming at the towards the water but not perfectly. It's just massive.

Anyway, any guesses????
Thanks CIMG4970.JPGCIMG4969.JPGCIMG4970.JPGCIMG4969.JPG

Someone posted on the shipwreck forum that it may be a capstan from a sailing ship.,

Well everyone, I'm back home from "vacation" and I have an announcement. I have solved the "mystery of the treasure of the iron thing buried in the sand on the hard to get to beach in San Luis Obispo"..... And the winner is?? Let me post some more pics below. And, of all things, I SHOULD have really known this oneCIMG5000.JPGCIMG5001.JPGCIMG4998.JPG

Definitely looks like an engine block! Bummer for you rocny that it is not a treasure chest! If you all are up to it, it will still bring fair money for the trouble at a Recycler.

It looks to me like a small block chevy v-8. Could be another brand but whatever. It's stayin there for as long as I can tell. Unless someone drives up to it with a boat it ain't walkin' out with anyone where it is. Thanks for the fun!
Oh and of course when I was already to leave with everything in my hands I turned to walk away and stepped right in the hole after I filled it right up over both my boots full of wet sand(obviously not quite as dense as before....:-).. Felt like I was in one of those saturday morning cartoons I used to watch with quicksand.

Oh well. At least you know. Otherwise you would be going through life thinking about the treasure you left behind. Thanks for the update.
