Took Modern Miner on a "Field Trip" today...

...and a great trip it was. Chris (mave2535) and I invited Modern Miner out with us today to our "Maverick Site" way out in the sticks. It's a late 1800's home/farm site with massive potential. The house itself was burned down in 1986 (built sometime in the 1870s) and never cleaned up - therefore, impossible to get near/onto the foundation (tin roof laying on top of it all). Chris and I will be undertaking the monumental task of clearing some timber and all the "remains" of the roof and such this winter. We know for sure there are good things to dig underneath it all. Anyway, there are at least four other structures located within 30 yards or so surrounding the house itself. Beyond that, we have approximately 160 acres of bean fields to hunt and across the road there is another 100 acres of field as well as another fifty right on the river. We started off in the vicinity of the house and out buildings - my first good signal was a small broken buckle still attached to a small leather strap (possibly an old dog collar?) - before filling my plug I ran the coil over the hole again to see if maybe the other piece wasn't still in there. I got another sharp signal again so I ran the pinpointer around the sides and low and behold I saw the edge of a coin. I called Chris and Doug over to check it out because it looked like gold on the edge. When I pulled it out it still looked gold and I thought all three of us would have a coronary :tongue3:. Unfortunately it was not gold but it turned out to be a 1924 50 Centimes! I'd love to know the story on how an early French coin found it's way to a farm in the middle of North Carolina! Well, we ended up diggin' lots of iron and some interesting things that I'll let the boys post on there own, but one of the coolest "finds" we made today was a colonial era burial ground back in the woods between the river and the field! The landowner had told us of a colonial era homesite in the far corner of his property - it's part of an original land grant of 680 acres granted to a settler by the King of England back in the 1600s!!! We didn't find the foundation (yet) but we did find the headstones. That was all the proof we needed. I managed to get a few shots of the stones (see pics) but the one I'll be going back to re-shoot pics of is the earliest date we found - 1716!!! As soon as they cut the remainder of the beans, we'll be hitting that field hard and hopefully digging up some killer North Carolina colonial relics!
All in all, we may not have found "Yama-sheet-a treasure" - but we had a great time. The weather was outstanding and the company was great. Doug and I played a cruel joke (all in good fun) on Chris (see video) ;D - and we all had a bunch of laughs. Truly my best "find" of the day was actually a gift - Doug gave Chris and I both our "first" Civil War bullets from his collection. I got the chills just holding that thing - truly awesome. My apologies for the novel-length post, but it's been a while since I posted anything decent. Enjoy the pics and the hilarious short video (courtesy of Modern Miner Productions ;D) and keep on swingin'...

By the way - Doug left the dress at home thank goodness... :tongue3: ;D

Andy,
Thanks again buddy. I had a great time. I can't believe you found that coin that quick! I about soiled myself when you yelled "GOLD!". :o
I'm ready to trade my Air Corp pin for your coin now. (or Chris's ring) ;D
Be sure to PM Buckles for some tips on locating that Colonial house. If anyone can lead us there, he can! :icon_king:
I still say it sat in the corner of the soybean field.
Let me know when those beans are cut & I'll haul b-tt back up. I may let you lower me down into that well if you tie a rope to my feet. The outhouse is out of the question though. :tard:
I want another crack at the soybean fields. I really enjoyed that part.
Thanks again Dude.

Wow Looks like a really great day cant wait til you all post more of future hunts we want pics after clean up and do try to clean up the grave sites like was said above ... just because. t There is a TH club close to here that does that type thing its the greatest!
And there is probably at least another homestead near by with the head stones and back then families stayed togeather real close when they married they farmed togeather and such.

Re: Took Modern Miner on a "Field Trip" today...

Many thanks to everyone for taking the time to check out this post and for all the great comments .

Some more "tidbits" - Chris and I will be heading back there sometime this week to photograph and record all the headstones information that we can (take an accurate count as well). I'll be measuring exactly how large of an area the burial site sits on and also checking out a couple of potential cellar holes. Doug actually found what we think could be one by almost falling in - :o - we'll just have to see. Lots of clearing to do and I'd rather start in the area of the farmhouse first. I already have a buyer lined up for all the scrap metal we can haul and thanks to Creeper71, we just might have two or three "vintage wood" companies looking to buy all the wood from the surrounding structures. I hope it all goes relatively smoothly because the money sure is needed 'round here.

As for the genealogy info of the folks that are buried - so far we've only found one stone with a different name than the others. Most of one family has been laid to rest here. The county in which this site lies on already has record of the names from what we've been told by the landowner. There's only one descendant left from the original family name (supposedly) and that person actually visits once a year (again, so we've been told). The landowner is set on keeping his property private. The acreage adjacent to both sides of his land is owned by a large corporation that apparently has tried pressuring him to sell - fortunately he's a tough old bird who refuses to do so. Anyone interested in throwing in a hand to help that lives within an hour or so of Lexington, NC just shoot me a PM. You'll be welcome to hunt with us and most certainly you'll be fed very well... ;D

Thanks again y'all...

Re: Took Modern Miner on a "Field Trip" today...

DDD,

If almost all of those headstones were the same name, then the property was most likely divided up among male heirs, and there are likely several pre-1700 house sites to find.

Regards,

Buckles

That is a great looking place. There is no telling what's there waiting to be found and so many ways to find it. The time span between the house on the ground and the Graves from the 1700's is Awesome.I would have to dig every signal and write down any relic or coin, what area your finding it and what time period,so you can pattern the layout of time.
I hope you all make some Awesome discoveries and good luck.

ROFL over the video....Sounds like you all had a great time...I would have had a coronary over that gold coin also.... :D

Re: Took Modern Miner on a "Field Trip" today...

Planting a fake gold coin? PLANTING A FAKE GOLD COIN?! Doing some thing that is pure, unadulterated evil, just to see their expression of hope and lust immediately turned to sadness and despair? Crushing all further hopes and dreams, just to appease your sick twisted desires? I like it.

With all of those headstones around looks like a few generations of people buried around there. Hope you don't accidentally dig some one up :D looks like a promissing place though. HH Ron

Aside from possibly cleaning up the area and recording/photographing as many names/stones that we can find, we won't be hunting in that area. We have a pretty solid idea of where the house was located - now we're just waiting on those darn beans to get cut :P. And, as I mentioned before, anyone interested in md'ing here with us - you're more than welcome if you are willing to lend a hand with the clean-up effort at the old house site across the road from this field...

Re: Took Modern Miner on a "Field Trip" today...

Be very careful of what kind of people you tell about the gravesites, Ar-keel-haul-ojists will be everywhere, and the place will be off limits to ya.
