Too Bad This Treasure Site Has A Political Component

All Treasure Hunting
I left Facebroke 6 years ago to escape political commentary. I won't ever be joining what Facebroke has metastasized into, META. This site is the only social media I am part of. I'm nearly 65. I read books and still read newspapers. Haven't listened to a single podcast. I don't talk to imaginary assistants on my phone. I wish I could avoid artificial intelligence, whatever the hell that is.

This is a Treasure hunting site. When I'm out metal detecting in the woods, politics is far from my mind. Often, people in general are too. Well, I sometimes think about loyalists and revolutionaries, depressions and recessions, and how they relate to what I am finding in the ground. When I entered the hobby I bought American, a top of the line White's. Wish they would have modernized and stayed in the game.

I don't read the political sections here. In a nearly equally divided country, it's only bound to irritate. I sometimes think of leaving this site and searching for a purist treasure hunting site.

Human nature being what it is, I'm not sure you will ever find a "social" site that doesn't deviate a bit from its stated purpose.

I don't read the political sections here.
That's the easiest solution.

In a nearly equally divided country, it's only bound to irritate.
For what it's worth, the majority of the time, the political discussions don't really get very irritating, even when there's disagreement. All things considered, it's remarkably civil. Mostly. 8-)

You don’t have to read the political postings! Pretty simple really. Unless you are a control freak; not wanting others to go beyond your limits.
If you don’t window peek at your neighbor’s home, you won’t see what disgusts you. Just saying…
Choose wisely. 👍🏼

The only place politics is allowed is our politics forum under Charter Membership. If you are seeing politics not related to treasure hunting in other forums report it. The only way you would see any political threads is as charter Member and you would still have to enter the politics forum to see and read the threads. It is up to each of us to choose to read a thread or not just like watching a TV show. Don't watch or read what you don't enjoy.

I'm just a little bit older and can relate to most of what you're saying.

Yes I agree with White's and their products. A person could never meet a better person than Mr White.

When I go out detecting-the world problems just don't exist-period.
I go out to forget everything, it's my time with the machine, and digging dirt.

I've read other forums and all seem to deviate from the subject of what they're all about. I think it's just human nature to mix things up, fall down rabbit holes of different ideas.

This site has so many sub themes that even after all these years there's no way of keeping up to what has been posted. So it's a pick and choose type thing as there's some pretty interesting facts & some pretty weird ideas and thoughts posted.

Having only a purist detecting site? Best of luck on finding one as they all seem to be a box of chocolates.

Should I come here to also find baking advice or tips on fixing on my old Ford Explorer?

There's probably a section for that, or even under General Discussion even.

Lots of folks can talk about baking. I've read about all sorts of food, points, iron, annealing.
Baking covers a lot of things.
Repairing the old Ford also-why not.

I think everyone knows how to swing a machine, and dig a proper hole.
There's only so much one can cover about either.
I read some wise words one time on this very forum.
If the person really wanted the forum to be the way they wanted it-Go start their own up. :dontknow:

I guess after so many years folks just accept the good with the bad.
Don't like somebody-hit ignore.
Like someone-follow.

Granted some folks have been on here for 20 yrs, and have less posts than the regular poster does in a short period of time.
I really don't care myself how often folks post on the forum.
Though through the years there has been a lot of upstanding folks that are no longer on this side of the grass, and it's a dam shame that the knowledge has passed along with them as well.
Sure they left some written knowledge on the forum years ago, but interacting is missed.

Best of luck on what you're searching for online.

Too bad?

You know the option is starting your own site and pretending detecting doesn't involve any politics?

Public parks. Curb strips. Beaches.
Antiquity laws.
treasure trove laws.
Private land trespassing laws.
None of that affects you?
Sweet!

Yes sir, you can get advice here, for both, backing soda in our receipe forum, and auto advice in automotive forum.

I will note our current politics forum version was here 7 years before you joined, now 11 years old.

Not sure what the issue is, just don't click on any political threads, they are only in the politics forum.

Great idea. To make it even better someone could start their own forum and only allow posts by them alone. Every day they could post something and look back upon it thinking "this is nice, there are no politics in this". Oops.. they just ruined their own forum by mentioning that ugly word- politics. Worse yet they had the thought.
Politics are very pervasive in everyone's life today, I get it. But rather than be ill about it anymore or let it irritate me I've decided to have some fun with it and poke fun at all the nimrods in the news. The stuff is so insane you can't make it up. Makes great comedy.

Up until I made this thinking out loud comment, metal detecting was not a political activity for me. I would never dream of starting a treasure website because it would distract me from being in the field and actually participating in the hobby. Metal detecting will never be a political pastime for me.

While we are on the subject, I think everyone using this site should make the charter contribution every year to help run and maintain it. It's really not a lot of money for the value.

I will note, that although I do not read political discussions, while searching the site for interesting topics, I will come across thread starters using slurs of politicians names. These, by themselves, convey political commentary. It's like having someone flash you. Then tell me I didn't have to look.

I have learned so much from this site from other detectorists. I will never forget, early on when I first began metal detecting, I posted a beautiful George Washington Inaugural button I found. I had no idea what it was, but posters on the site politely told me what it was without calling me an idiot for not knowing. I visit this site foremost for encouragement. Seeing what other people are finding on a daily basis motivates me to get out there and search. Sometimes I need this motivation. I spend entire days in the field walking and swinging for hours with a back pack full of gear. In the snow, rain, freezing, hot and humid weather while dodging hunters bullets and deer ticks. Then having others explain to me what I have found. Maybe encouraging others to get out there by showing my finds and teach them something I have learned. Plus, I do read gear recommendations and buy accordingly.

Despite not ever pulling in what this site considers a banner find, I have pieced together, in the past five years, an unprecedented look into early settler life in my area. The old snobby historians in my area won't give me an audience. They can't imagine me finding something beyond a corroded piece of crap. I come from a science background. I am unwilling to make bold historical statements like them without proof. Recently I did some carpentry work at the home of a member of our local historical society. I mentioned that I was a detectorist and have a nice colonial collection. He totally blew the comment off. The next time I worked at his house, I brought a mid-1700's Georgian shoe buckle with matching knee buckle. Both in working condition with all three pieces intact, minimal corrosion. I also brought a matching handcrafted silver horse bridle rosette that is museum-quality, and nice period buttons to match. The response: "Would you like to give a talk to the society?"

Okay, I apologize for not acknowledging other people who enjoy this site for reasons other than treasure hunting. That's cool. The site name threw me off. I guess metaphorically, I run into nails and iron while searching for treasure, so why not come across it in life? Like our detector units, we have to learn to use notch filters. Yes, we might miss some treasure, but we certainly will save time.

If I take a lot of heat for expressing my opinion in this thread, I will leave. Otherwise, I am going to spend an eight hour day tomorrow in freezing weather searching a colonial site with a 20lb. backpack on. Where I found a 1787 CT copper last week, and a 1780 1/2 real minted in Mexico City two weeks before. Excited to find something to post.

You know what would be an interesting topic to discuss? I have made observations regarding coin condition related to whether or not a site has been actively farmed for 100's of years, exposing the metals to agricultural chemicals.

First Indian head was right next to a road in a park.
Salt from winter applications was likely part of it's condition.

A park that tolerates my dandelion picking for wine making , and allows detecting leaves the plants and soil unamended. Fine by me.
Prior old farm site near the majority of coins are much newer. And condition isn't bad away from the road. And away from the snow discard pile areas.

Perhaps in the future you might. I'm not knocking how you feel, and I am not in total disagreement with you. There are MANY different topics in the Forum section, including Dumpster Diving, Stamp collecting, a Vet's corner, Magnet fishing etc. etc. etc.. The list goes on, I do not visit them all, and I agree with you, this IS after all a Treasure hunting Forum, as in metal detecting. Anything else I read is elective reading. Some things interest me, some do not. I do have the choice, and on T-Net there are many to choose from. We do get some off the wall things on occasion, be it politics or just plain rude and at time offensive remarks, but we do have moderators that do a rather fine job keeping a lid on it.

As the late Andrew Breitbart said, "politics is downstream from culture".
When people speak freely and openly there are bound to be times when certain biases and even prejudices come to the fore. We are not robots after all and we must all be guilty of assuming others share our own worldview and let's face it, if we as individuals cannot tolerate those who share different opinions then we should really just unsulate and find a cosy little echo chamber far from the maddening crowds.

(Deleted for politics)

Eastender, sorry, but isn't saying we should close down or not have our politics forum because you object to the title of some of the threads like telling a library or book store to stop loaning out or selling certain magazines and books because you don't like the titles.

You are allowed to express your opinion on this without taking heat as long as rules are followed and that also applies to the replies.

FYI, nothing you have said changes the fact you are a respected member here.
