Today's hunt.

I was out for a while this morning. Found a few things but wasn't really expecting to find much because I was covering some ground that I already covered just to make sure I didn't miss anything. Didn't need any coffee to wake up this morning as i ran into a pretty unusual situation right off the bat. I was planning to search an area near where i found some of the colonial coins on this site. I included a picture of this area (below). I wanted to see if I could stamp down some of this grass enough to swing my detector. It was a semi-clear area right next to where i found some of the colonials. I entered the area where you see the X. Right behind the X where you see the patch of darker grass I went to take a step and a bobcat sprung up out of the grass (in the opposite direction thankfully) I was warned by the homeowner that there was a bobcat in the area but I hadn't seen it until today. I wish i could have snapped a picture of it but that sucker was too quick.

Now that i was sufficiently awake, I continued my hunt.....in a different area. I might try the "bobcat" area another time. I found three flat buttons pretty quickly. This officially puts me over 50 buttons at this site. My only other good find of the day was an axe head. I'm not really sure how old this thing is. For all I know It's fairly modern. I have found alot of farm type equipment at this site.....it may have been lost by a farmer more recently. Any opinions on the approximate age of the axe head will be appreciated.

I'm still waiting for them to cut down the rest of the corn at this site so I can hunt some areas more efficiently. I included a few more pictures of the site for those of you that like them. There are a few more fields that I haven't even been in until today. Hopefully, I can turn up a few relics in these fields as well. The last picture is of an area in the woods. There is alot of sedimentary rock near here. I'm not 100% sure this is a foundation and not just really symmetrical sedimentary rock but i snapped a picture of it anyway. What do you guys think? Foundation?

Good old upstate NY. If it wasn't a bobcat, it was the biggest 2 1/2 foot long cat I've ever seen. Like i said, the owner warned me but I was thinking "no way".

Congrats on some awesome finds there.

Re: Today's hunt.

What a fantastic site, Evolution! I can't believe all the buttons Tnetters are diggin' these day. I'm lucky to find one per site. :-\

That sure looks like some kind of foundation to me....did you hunt around it looking for nail signals?

I'm glad Mr. Bobcat ran away from you....not over you! :o :o

I found this at the end of my hunt so i didn't search it today. I'll check it out next time. By the way, the picture of you tossing the muffin at Kirk was freakin hilarious. thanks for the reply. Glad you enjoyed the pics.

Re: Today's hunt.

Great place you have there. Looks like an old splitting maul....The bottles are great...looks like quite a time span between the dates of them.....Good Luck and hope to see more of this place and your finds.

It's definitely shaped like a splitting maul Gypsy. I grew up in the boonies (upstate New York) and my parents heated the house in the winter with a wood stove. One of my biggest chores was to split and stack wood for this purpose. I have used many mauls in my time and this is the exact same shape but look at the size. It's not any bigger than my watch. Did they make mauls this small?

I see you referred to the bottles. I also noticed that I didnt include them in any of the pics on this post. Were you referring to these bottles? I found these at this site also. I found a small bottle dump in the woods adjacent to this site. Nothing great but i picked up these four bottles just as an example of what was there.

Re: Today's hunt.

Nice relics, Rob. You are bound to strike some more old coppa at this site. If you can, try to walk between the cornrows. We did that all summer and it paid off.

Are there many "rubbish" signals in the areas you already hit? I would go back and dig those!

Good luck on this site!

I agree with Kirk on walking between the corn rows. Also, diggin all the "iffy" signals, especially if the area is plowed. So what coins did you find there? I figure that's the Vermont Copper site...but what else did ya get? Great work, Evo!

Re: Today's hunt.

I agree with Buck and KirkPA on digging those "iffy" signals. My 1700 cut William III halfpenny (or, since it was cut, a 1700 William III farthing :D) read at "P" on "Penny" on my analog meter, but a few of my buttons were garbage hits.

It is the Vermont copper site BB. In addition to those I also found a no date King George II, 2 other no detail large coppers, 1 cut copper (no detail), 4 indian heads (1907, 1864, 1868, no date), 1876 CC Seated Liberty dime, 1828 large cent, I also included an 1864 2 cent piece in the picture (I actually found that one at another house next to this property but included it in the picture). Two of the coin flips in the picture are actually flat buttons with missing shanks. They've got some gilt left on them so I put them in the coin flips to preserve them. I also included the 2 wheaties i found at the site (1934, and 1939). Kirk would have tossed them into the nearest creek.....which I also thought about doing) ;D Those cornrows are planted pretty close together. It's hard to swing the coil in there but I will definitely give that a shot next time out. Thanks for the advice guys.

Alot of the buttons I'm digging at this site are in the 30's and 40's on the VDI meter on my DFX. This is where most of the trash registers also. I;m digging all of those signals. The only signals I have skipped over are a few choppy iron signals as there is alot of iron farm junk that I have been recovering. Thats one of the reasons I'm not sure about the age of the axe head. All of the coppers were in the 70's on the VDI meter (penny hits) except for the large cent which registered as a quarter hit. (about 84 on the VDI)

Re: Today's hunt.

Those are some fantastic finds. That maul looks more like a hammer to me. I've seen similar ones before. If I can find a pic of one in my Old American Tools book I will post it for you.
