Today's hunt.

I was out for a while this morning. Found a few things but wasn't really expecting to find much because I was covering some ground that I already covered just to make sure I didn't miss anything. Didn't need any coffee to wake up this morning as i ran into a pretty unusual situation right off the bat. I was planning to search an area near where i found some of the colonial coins on this site. I included a picture of this area (below). I wanted to see if I could stamp down some of this grass enough to swing my detector. It was a semi-clear area right next to where i found some of the colonials. I entered the area where you see the X. Right behind the X where you see the patch of darker grass I went to take a step and a bobcat sprung up out of the grass (in the opposite direction thankfully) I was warned by the homeowner that there was a bobcat in the area but I hadn't seen it until today. I wish i could have snapped a picture of it but that sucker was too quick.

Now that i was sufficiently awake, I continued my hunt.....in a different area. I might try the "bobcat" area another time. I found three flat buttons pretty quickly. This officially puts me over 50 buttons at this site. My only other good find of the day was an axe head. I'm not really sure how old this thing is. For all I know It's fairly modern. I have found alot of farm type equipment at this site.....it may have been lost by a farmer more recently. Any opinions on the approximate age of the axe head will be appreciated.

I'm still waiting for them to cut down the rest of the corn at this site so I can hunt some areas more efficiently. I included a few more pictures of the site for those of you that like them. There are a few more fields that I haven't even been in until today. Hopefully, I can turn up a few relics in these fields as well. The last picture is of an area in the woods. There is alot of sedimentary rock near here. I'm not 100% sure this is a foundation and not just really symmetrical sedimentary rock but i snapped a picture of it anyway. What do you guys think? Foundation?

Thanks for looking folks. I hope i can get a few more good finds next time out.

Terrific finds! Looks like it might be a foundation to me. I like your 4 wheeler with the plow...that's what I need. Nice pictures...looks like the upstate NY that I remember. Keep digging and congrats on all your finds.
Thanks prober. I want one of those as well. I borrow that one from the home owner when I hunt. They are very nice people and let me use their Quad so i dont have to do that much walking. It's a pretty large area and I would get tired quickly if I had to walk everywhere. Were talking miles here.

Re: Today's hunt.

Beautiful country there. Nothing like a freshly plowed old field to bring things to the top. I have a field like that back home that has produced for over 15 years. Each plowing brings more stuff to the surface.

Great finds.

Re: Today's hunt.

I couldn't imagine finding that much stuff from one site! Maybe I'm just not looking good enough, or maybe BB and KFB have already hammered every good site in Ky. lol

;D ;D Maybe so... ;) Nah. Seriously, there's always tons of sites around just begging to be hunted.

Sometimes the sites that don't really look like anything end up being the best sites. You drive by thinking.."Oh thats just a field, I won't find anything there." But sometimes those are exactly the places you need to be searching. Do some research and then look for less obvious spots in very old towns.

Thanks for the response and good luck. I hope you find some great spots in the near future.

Those are some fantastic finds. That maul looks more like a hammer to me. I've seen similar ones before. If I can find a pic of one in my Old American Tools book I will post it for you.
Hey Ed, mojjax identified the hammer/axe object on the what is it forum as a Coopers hoop driving hammer with a link to e-bay. Looks almost exactly like what I have. Check it out on the what is it forum when you get a chance and see if you agree.

I will echo this comment. Well said, Evo. Knowledge is power in this hobby. If you know where something used to be--and if others don't have any idea that something used to be there--you'll have an excellent hunt ahead of you.

Wow! You've really found some nice stuff there!

I know Illinois isn't an original 13 colony state but it's got some history. It doesn't have to be a site right around the corner. This site is not near me. I have to drive a while to get to it. Thats why I've only been hitting it every 7-10 days or so. Make a map of locations that are within an hour from you and cross reference it with how old the towns are and see what you can turn up. Good luck watercolor. I have faith in you. Make us proud! ;D

Re: Today's hunt.

I see you too have been out enjoying the beautiful weather we've been having. Not bad for mid October. I was going to say the axe looks like a hammer used for cutting and nailing cedar shakes or wood shingles. Nice finds. Is that the Hudson or Mohawk int the background of you picture?

Re: Today's hunt.

Congrats on such an incredible place to hunt. You can hunt and rehunt amidst all that wonderful scenery. Nice finds.

This site is near the Hudson Vision Quest. It's a good ways south of Rensselaer though. I don't know if you're familiar with Rhinebeck NY. It's a few minutes from there.

Know of a few old Planes that fly around Rhinbeck. Most covered with silk and have multiple wings. Lots of history down your way, and in the Hudson valley.

I grew up near there Vision. The old Rhinebeck aerodrome was nearby. All kinds of old planes flying around on the weekends. It's also the site of the Dutchess county fairgrounds. Glad to know someone has heard of the place. ;D
