Ok , I received a reply to a recent post by a long time member on here , which I might add has had some awesome finds ! So after thought , yes he is right sometimes there are some keepers hidden in the junk piles. So I decide to post all my junk finds from the last 8 or 9 digs with DHD . Usually when we are done for the day most of the junk stuff goes in the bed of my truck after we clean our bags out . So here is the junk let me know if you find any goodies in there .....

There are a few interesting things in there, but one thing stands out immediately to me, and that is the item in the center of the first photo, above the pair of organ reeds. It looks like it may be a Civil War Era tompion. Could you post a better photo of it?

Best Wishes,

Buckles

Indeed, when I first saw the picture that immediately stood out as a tompion to me as well :occasion14:

I love this post! What a great idea to show all your unknown junk-stuff and have it be ID'd! Can others add their finds on this thread too or should a new post be started?
I think it would be cool to see other stuff in one place!

What is the ivy piece and what is a tompion?

there were several different types, but a tompion is simply, a plug for the muzzle of a gun to keep out dust and moisture.

Oh I see it! Thank you for the explanation.
When I have some unknowns, I put them in a old pickle jar with hot water and a little soap and give it a gentle shake or two. It usually reveals something interesting where otherwise I may have thrown it all away.
I keep a box in my Jeep in sit a cuffed over paper bag in it. All the "junk" goes in it and when it's full I go through it, just in case. When I go out with others they love it because it's so easy to deal with it.

Thats pretty cool about tompion , I mite revisit that site because I found that at the top of a filled it well from a civil war home site next to a battle field and unfortunately progress has destroyed the site "target " and only about 20 feet of it is left . And who knows maybe the barrel is still there as well.
