This probably is the wrong place to post this but I put it here because this topic affects all beach go'ers and th'ers...

For those folks that live on the Treasure Coast (and more specifically in Indian River County)... can someone tell me when Indian River County became a concentration camp?!!

After the hurricanes, IRC put up chain link fencing all around the Wabasso Beach access, installed a monstrousity that looks like a prison watch tower, and keeps folks from having access to the beach "after hours". At numerous IRC parks, there are signs stating all the things you can't do on the beach... no fishing, no diving, and so on... ok so what's left to do on the beach?!! I went to go for an early morning walk to watch the sunrise and the park gates aren't being opened until well after sunrise (in many cases 8am or later). And now we have another step towards invading our rights...

A pole with a CCTV Camera has now been installed on the Dune at Turtle Trail Beach Access. WHY?!! I questioned a local law enforcement officer about this and he stated that it was John's Island that installed the camera. After much conversation and debate, the officer finally broke down and told me that it actually was IRC Parks Department that installed the camera. Why would he lie about this?!! It was also reasoned that this particular beach access was chosen to do this because it was not as heavily used as the others in the area and if they could "get away with" installing a CCTV Camera here without anyone complaining about it, then it would be easier to pass legislation to install these in all the beach accesses. Why are they doing this?!! If they are allowed to do this on one place, where does this stop?!!

I don't know how you all feel about this, but I don't believe that this is acceptable. We should have the right to go to the beach without being molested by the government "eye in the sky"... I have spoken to many others who agree and we will be speaking out through media and attending county commission meetings. I am tired of the rich controlling what goes on at the beach and i am tired of paying in tax dollars for the rich to have the homes shored up with crap fill sand because they chose to build someplace that should never have been built on in the first place. As far as i'm concerned, it is my fondest wish that Mother Nature wipes the slate clean and the beach goes back to being the way it was meant to be... a place devoid of privileged people... the beaches should be enjoyed by everyone!!

Have I lost my mind and am I fanatical... you better believe it and its about damn time! So why am I ranting on about this? I am just asking that anyone who feels the same way about these issues, please stand up and be counted. Go to the county meetings and be heard. Go to the newspapers and put in your 2 cents worth. Oh yeah, and if you happen to pass that CCTV Camera at Turtle Trail Beach access, give 'em a nice one finger wave... you know the finger...

welcome to big brother 101 --and trust me it isn't going to get better unless lots of folks bitch loudly and publicly about it --- Ivan

Remember the book '1984'? We are living in it. The paranoia and fear factor on citizens enables the gov to get away with this cr@p! Little by little we lose our liberties...

arrrrh!

They are just trying to take away the beach. Mine Mine Mine. Hope it doesn’t happen but its heading that way. >:(

more big brother in the guise of protecting us from the "terrorists".its looking like who we have to be protected from is our "protectors". Those who would exchange liberty for freedom deserve neither" Benjamin Franklin.

oops!! got that quote wrong.i guess my blood pressure was up "Those who would trade liberty for security deserve neither" my apologies to Ben Franklin

I think the quote is "Those who would sacrifice essential Liberty for temporary Security deserve neither". Having said that, Please! write your Congressmen and women and COMPLAIN!! I do, and they send me e-mails saying 'blah, blah... I feel your pain blah blah..... appreciate your opinion, etc. ad nausuem. As for the people who say they have nothing to hide (this is a point of contention for me) That is NOT the point. I have nothing to hide but if the police come to my door 'they ain't comin' in' without a warrant. Why? Because the Constitution says so! And that is the only reason I need. I am disgusted with the erosion of liberties we have suffered, tired of the line of bs about national security and the 'terrists', and sick to death of people falling for the 'fear' ploy used by our Government. As Winston Churchill said 'we have nothing to fear but fear it's self'. If you aren't outraged, you aren't paying attention.

AMEN.. phipsfolly, a police state is what its coming to. cameras at every traffic light in my home town.
not being able to watch the sunrise on a quiet beach, sounds like a violation to my persuit of happiness.
let us know how we can help the situation up there.

Thomas Jefferson:

"When people fear the government we have a Tyranny, when the government fears the people we have LIBERTY....."

America is in decline, the system is corrupt, and the welfare state is growing.

It sucks that IRC closes the beaches during the hours of darkness, but how many of you have gone to the county commissioners meeting, and signed up to complain about this issue? Or have any of you even written your county commissioner and complained about it? Every letter they get, they check the rolls to see if you vote regularly. The letters from people who vote will be taken seriously, the others go into that other pile. I would have complained long ago as I do hunt those beaches, but I am just north of Indian River County, and we are still free up in Brevard County.
I think that cameras at the county parks is a good idea, and I have not heard any convincing argument that this is an invasion of privacy. Lets face it, cameras are a deterrent to crime, and more and more I hear of crime increasing on the beach side. The down side is that most criminals are too stupid to notice the cameras, and that is how they are eventually caught.

95% of all crime is by repeat offenders! Go out and elect some folks that will keep the criminal element locked up, instead of electing the bleeding hearts that let them all back on the street like a pack of wild dogs.

Democracy in action...
THUMBS UP

NO BIG BROTHER: Thankfully, Martin County commissioners have shot down a proposal to install talking cameras or video cameras at isolated beaches and parks.

The proposal, introduced recently by Commissioner Michael DiTerlizzi as a way to discourage people from “hooking up,” was defeated 3-2 Tuesday.

Commissioner Susan Valliere, who joined with the majority in rejecting the proposal, spoke for many county residents when she said, “it’s just a bit too much ‘Big Brother’ for me. I don’t think it’s appropriate.”

This technology may have discouraged some people from engaging in illicit sexual activity. However, there has to be a limit to the intrusion of government in our daily lives.

Installing cameras at area beaches and parks is crossing the line.

In Martin county, the cameras were "intended" to cut down on sexual liasons between men (yuck). Yes, it's Orwellian, and an affront to our personal freedoms. The Wabasso incident may be associated with work to repair the beach and parking and protecting equipment there.

As a treasure hunter, you're preaching to the choir..unfortunately, you're also p---ing into the wind. The powers that be up there simply don't care what you think.

Wow... thanks everyone for your input. It sure is good to hear that there are others who feel the same. I will do what I can to voice my opinion where it can be heard and encourage you all to do the same. I am checking in to where and when the county commission meetings are held and will be attending to speak my mind. Whether it makes a difference or not to the government, it makes a difference to me knowing that i put in the effort and was heard.

As for crime on the beach side... I am an ex-cop and have several friends currently in law enforcement in the area. I speak with them constantly and know what is going on in the area. There is no more crime on the "beach side" than there is anywhere else and we couldn't possibly put in enough cameras to aid in the fight against crime if we tried...

I would not mind the cameras if they were placed in a position to face the parking lots at the beach accesses as vehicle breakin's do occur and that would serve a purpose in id'ing criminals. But the camera in question is on the beach and its not because of any kind of sexual activity going on... why would the officer I spoke to not be honest about the camera?

There is another motive... what I believe is happening is that the rich homeowners on AIA are using money and influence to turn Vero Beach/Wabasso/and Sebastian into another Jupiter Island... no one is allowed on the beach anywhere along Jupiter Island except at the one end where there is a park! I got a ticket and was escorted off the beach at Jupiter Island. I was told that the homeowners OWN THE BEACH there and that I could only be on the beach at the park access!! BS but I wasn't going to get into a dispute over it with the not so friendly Jupiter Island cop... not worth the trouble at that moment. If one were to research the actual property lines of those homes there, I would think you would find that they do not in fact legally own the beach.

And lastly, the attitude of... the "powers that be simply don't care what you think" is exactly what they want us to think! The government has shown no accountability for its actions nor any kind of regard for its citizens for so long, that we have all just gotten used to that statement and so we just complain and then do nothing about it!! I for one, will not "go quietly into the night"... God Speed

Maybe they put the camera up to figure out where you are finding those emeralds. ;)

Is the camera mounted on a wooden pole? -a chainsaw might do the trick

NICE!! Nah, nowhere near my "g" spot ("g" being "greenie") Tom. Its gonna' take alot more than a lame CCTV camera to track me down!

Its not so much the camera itself that bugs me... its the intentions behind the camera... its the lies about why the camera is there and who put it there in the first place. I spoke with the county parks director today and he denied that they put the camera there!! Yet the cop said they did... somebodies hiding the erection! Uhhh, of the pole with the camera on it that is... :o

Welcome to the United States of Communism. It gets more and more like it every day. ::)

Wow... a friend of mine just told me that he found a microchip in the label of his shirt he purchased at WalMart. I thought he was joking... he's NOT! I just read an information release about this topic and clothing manufacturer's have started putting tracking devices in the labels of clothing ANDTHEY ARE NOT REQUIRED TO TELL CONSUMERS!!! The release also states that the tracking devices can put picked up by anyone (ie. the Government) who has the compatible equipment and can be used to track people!!! This country better wake up and see what's going on with "big brother"!!!

I will email anyone who wants a copy of the release... but this will be the end of this post for obvious reasons.
