Well friends...here it is. I have been to the mountaintop. Upon my arrival there, I see Mountainman2 (also a Jersey guy) who has also found four George Washington Inaugural buttons at one site. The folks on this website tell me they came in sets of four, so I feel a strange sense of completeness. There is still some sifting to do at this site, so who knows, maybe another will show its face, although I wouldn't bet on it.

A couple of questions for you all:
1. Is anybody aware of any others besides MM2 and myself that have found 4 of these?
2. Does the fact that the four are from one set increase the overall value? I would think so.
3. Can someone awaken me from this incredible dream? Thanks

As a 2nd generation antique dealer here is my opinion on your question on value.

A complete set is always worth more, obviously, but the fact that they can be well assumed to be from the ORIGINAL set is at a far superior level. But the icing on the cake is that you have a level of provenance, in that you created a history of your finds with your posts, which always adds creedence and ups their value.

Not knowing the world population of this particular button style, I'd say by having your complete AND original set, you have at least doubled their value, than if sold separately. And this may be a very conservative estimate.
That was my question.....hope it isn't answered in one of the other comments. How many of these rare, historical buttons are
known to exist? Are there other types?

According to the sale of Cobbs collection, there were 42 seperate varieties.(Alberts may be different) This includes some commemorative and medallion button issues. At the time of this sale ,there were 76 known of this particular type found by Goalrush. Like I said....Alberts may have others as I do not have access to these.

OK, the website was working now, so here is the paragraph I referred in my above post that a complete set might be 5 not 4.

It is probable that five of the large size GWs in all Eagle and Star patterns were worn on a coat, eight being the accepted number for the Eagle and Star pattern. This has been borne out by the latter being found in places associated with those who served under General Washington, who naturally “dressed up” in uniform, while the other patterns have been found many times in the estates of descendants of prominent citizens of Washington’s day who wore “splendored” coats for glamorous occasions such as weddings, dinners, balls and Presidential entertainment of that era.

I know it is for a different pattern but the style of the coats at the time would dictate how many buttons would be considered "standard" I suppose.

I just googled "men's coats 1790 picture"..They had many style coats, with tons of different button numbers, plus they wore the same size buttons on their over sized cuffs, back pleats, and lapels. I counted 16 or more on one coat. There was a double breasted style with 8 in front, another with 11 down the center, and even more on a military coat with two rows down the front... Not sure if the coat styles of the times will be any answer to how many were in a set of GW buttons.

Way to go! The set is now complete!! Buttons of this calibre do not show up often. I wish to commend you for your persistence. You knew to keep at it, and it paid off!

I am curious, how close together were these buttons? What kind of site was this origionally - House, Tavern, etc? Also, you mention that you were sifting in order to find at least one of them. Why was this? Were they too deep to detect, or was iron/other metal in the way of the signal?

I am looking forward to seeing your article in W&E Magazine. Congratulations! Don't worry about waking, I can assure you that although your feet are not touching the floor, you are definatly not sleeping!
Anthony

These buttons were found within 8 feet of each other at a cellar hole to an old shepherd's cottage. The sifting was being done because we excavated the entire cellar hole. There was a lot of scrap metal to boot so the detector was going crazy in this area. Other artifacts that have surfaced so far include silverware, mother of pearl buttons, pieces of a clay pipe, a few intact bottles, a bunch of square-head nails and the seated quarter I posted in another thread. There is more sifting to do so we'll see if anything else turns up! Thanks for all of your kind words!

Funny...no banner votes????

wow Rick 4 GW's is nothing short of spectacular my friend , hope the site continues to produce for you .take care

Hey Rick, welcome to the top of the mountain! IMO, your buttons are rarer and in much better condition then the ones I uncovered. I do not see any reason why this should not only be on the banner but be under the best of Treasurenet. Looking forward to meeting you.MM2
