What is the definition of "assault weapon" in this original discussion?

I believe the government had a specific definition under the fawb. I think you can find that definition on a ton of diff sites or just use wiki. I think they made the mistake of focussing way to much on "cosmetics " so gun manufactures just quickly redesigned around the law. Best.
