I'm not sure why there are people on this thread essentially petitioning against this find making the banner. I have seen much more mundane and less rare finds on the top of this site. What gives?

Call it healthy debate and you'll feel better. :)

I've found 3. All Eagle and Star, which is the most common of varieties. I found it odd that 2 were the same, and 1 was a different variety, even though ALL were found at the same site. NONE made the banner. Haven't looked at it real close, but if IP has Id'd it as the Emelio than it probably deserves a top spot. Of course, it is all subjective to "The powers that be". Great patina.....and great find.

Doubter,
I hope people didn't read into my comment about rare and scarce as being in any way supposed to mean that this shouldn't be up top. It's a Banner find all day long. I would kill to have one. My point was that rare to some means there's 6 or 8 in the world. Scarce means something a bit different. I think certain high end collectors are the ones that think rare means that few. My buddy that owns a coin shop is one of those.
To me any Rattlesnake or GW is an easy Banner as I think they're the best of the best for what they represent.
I found a button that is potentially "unique" but it certainly doesn't make it better or more desirable than one of these. It's just semantics and is unfortunate if it took anything away from the OPs find.
Mawkus it's an incredible recovery and I would be very proud to own such an important historical piece that represent the most important political struggle in this great country's history. What could be better than a Patriotic or GW button to an American

I didn't spend too much time, but unless there's other varieties not shown on that page, or it's new, I think that's the only one it can be.

The verdigris on your GW Button button is amazing! :o This is what we all want to see on a button that's been dug!
I'm sure this is a find you'll always remember, what makes it extra special is that you're "still learning how to metal detect".

Many people ask me "what's your best find" ... that's a very hard question for me, as I literally have hundreds of favourite finds! :laughing7:

But this is one you'll always remember MawkusD!

Most of the dissenters are not from the U.S.,so maybe they don't understand the importance of this find. Brush up on your U.S. history and you will realize the significance of these buttons.

That is a great find, no doubt! I live in Nashville and hunt this area also. What people have to remember is that Nashville was founded in the late 1700's so there are actually more older sites here than a lot of folks realize. Don't do anything to that button other than wash it in soapy water with a soft toothbrush. Congrats on a pretty rare find! That is actually the 2nd one that I've seen that came from the Nashville area. One was found out off of Hillsboro road several years ago.

Just because one person has found 12 of them doesn't mean it isn't rare. That person found 5 in one day, if I remember correctly.

Again, there are 26 varieties of this button. Trying to lump them all together to refute their rarity doesn't work. They are all rare, since 99.9% of all metal detectorists will never find one.

I have no doubt I agree with you more than I disagree, but saying 99.9% of metal detectorists not finding one means something is rare is simply not the case. You can pick a random CT copper variety listed as common and 99.9% of detectorists are not going to dig one of those either. Where the problem lies is some people are using the word rare in the technical rating sense, and others as just a general term, as well as some only look at it from the metal detecting perspective, where others base it on the current market. My opinion is when you dig a good find if you want a true sense of what you have you have to disassociate it from detecting and base your thoughts as if the thing had just dropped in your pocket and you had no special connection.

PS: To me it's a banner find.

Let's put it this way. Any GW button is much "scarcer" than an 1808 eight reale ($30.00 on eBay) or a diamond ring (expensive, but an endless supply is available). Those are great finds, but if they're banner finds, then ALL GW buttons should be banner finds.

I voted Banner for this find (just for the record)

To me a banner find would be something I have either never seen on T-net or maybe once a year. There are lot of GWs on here and a few 8 reales. I think value has a lot to do with it. I would love a GW but wouldn't expect banner unless it were a rare variety, which would be reflected in the price.
