Rare, scarce, banner, or whatever: it's really old and really cool!

Nice find

Hi guys,
Sorry for the delayed response. I don't have the App for whatever reason, so I didn't see the notifications. I will go through your responses right now and reply.
Thanks

Okay, here are two photos of the back and front of the button. I have to be honest with you guys; I wasn't expecting this sort of reaction, because I haven't found anything this, obviously rare, or scarce, if there's a difference in the two. Its obviously rare to evoke this much response and opinion, and I appreciate every reply. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, and I'd be pumped if I received the banner votes, albeit I had no idea what banner meant, in regards to this site, until twenty minutes ago.

For those who are asking, I found the GW Button in Nashville, Tn. I'm still learning how to metal detect, so you can imagine I am not As familiar with Treasure.net as some other people are. Anyways, hope this helps and #embracedebate#ESPN-FirstTakers!

Great button and nice green color!

And to possibly end the debate, the Harold Cobb website's min. rarity rating is scarce, and that is where this particular button falls.

I personally think the usual ones we see are a little over rated, but that doesn't mean I would not be over the moon if I dug one.

I love the patina as well, but I'm afraid to brush the dirt off of the letters. Leave as is right?

I think its great that you didn't immediately scrub it with a wire brush or even run it under water. Definitely leave it just like it is - the dirt just adds character. Congratulations on an amazing find - in TN no less.

Your find is amazing, whether it's placed on the banner or not. Congratulations!

Maybe try really light scraping with a toothpick. Do a little spot and see if it's worth going on.

Agree with everything you're saying bud and knew exactly what you meant. Hell I think there's a guy in here who's found 11 GWs. Part of the problem is that this Banner is so subjective. Some think regular old gold rings and Spanish silver should be up there. I personally would like to see it be reserved for the absolute rare of the rare no doubt finds. But that's just me. It seems like there's 3 or 4 new banners a day lately. To each there own. Hope alls well my friend

HEAVYMETALNUT, and I'm pretty sure he's up to 12 now.
Rare is an over-used word.
This one is a very nice looking dug example for sure.

Thanks you guys. I'm likely going to leave it how it is. No need to remove the truth.

Wow that's a curve ball being found in Nashville i have never heard of one found there in Tenn..

Interesting i know the Tenn Trio will pull Dandy buttons once and a while..

Blaze

Not sure who the Tennessee trio is. Would you guys like to see the other finds from that night?

I think the fact that there have been a lot of banner finds lately is also a testament to be growth of this forum. When I joined there were half as many members. More truly banner worthy finds are being posted and there are more members to vote for them. I don't think the standard for banner finds is going down, if anything, I believe it is getting tougher to make it up top. Whether your GW button makes banner or not doesn't take away from how awesome of a find it is. It would certainly be in my primary showcase next too my two Mass Silvers, hammered silver and my Rattlesnake Button (if it was still mine that is, the picture will have to do). I'd rather find a GW button than a common gold coin anyway.

Thank you. I agree 100%.

Just because one person has found 12 of them doesn't mean it isn't rare. That person found 5 in one day, if I remember correctly.

Again, there are 26 varieties of this button. Trying to lump them all together to refute their rarity doesn't work. They are all rare, since 99.9% of all metal detectorists will never find one.

I'm not sure why there are people on this thread essentially petitioning against this find making the banner. I have seen much more mundane and less rare finds on the top of this site. What gives?

Thanks for the support. Always nice. I'm surprised that it is at all controversial that it was found in Tennessee.

I reckon I'm gonna have to find one in Texas now, just to really mess with folks... ;)

Serio, that's a really incredible find. I showed the pic to my wife, said "Look what this one fella found" and watched her jaw drop.

Well done, amigo... congratulations!
