After torrential rain over night, we had a late start today, but the weather improved nicely for us.

Not sure what this first item is, but he found it and I love it xx then I found my first livery button in ages, serpent (?) a little ring nd another corset stay hole, 2 small musket balls, 2 bits of buckles, pot mend lead nail, another on of these (I found one a few weeks ago, so nice to have a matching pair πŸ˜† ) tiny little lid, my tiny silver piece 😍 3 crusty pre dec coins, buttons, not sure what this nice coin is πŸ€” and finally a very tiny, battered hammered! xx

Another perfect weekend, now the long wait till next Sunday! πŸ˜† xx

Interesting and great finds you two! Congratulations! I thought the heads of the first piece looked like salamanders! My eyes are old and maybe just getting weak! Thanks for sharing again!

I'd say due to the tail end they resemble manatees. They were thought to be mermaids if l recall correctly.
I also thought they resembled that . But thought manatees would be out of the range.. seals matched closer. But otters even more. They can be seen in the pose shown. And holding hands.
Not perfectly back to back but on an angle... Even your two are on an angle
But what are they holding?
Thor's hammer? an anchor or something else?

True but the scales are throwing us off l think as otters don't have them either.

This will be an interesting pc to see if it's id.

Did some research and this is a good map to use as a guide: Carta Marina.

Interesting stuff but...

The scales , could also just be the style of decoration. The markings are also on the object they hold. To me the decorations(scales) could be clumps of wet fur, Or spotted fur. I really don't think scales when I see it.

(Apparently not so long ago really.. there was bear or lion sized otters...)

Although I don't see any attachment points, given the dimensions and weight of the first artifact I wonder if it was a pin or pendant. Is there any history of the property that might offer some clues?

This field has given us everything from my celtic gold stater, roman coins, hammered, lots of pottery scattered, also has a water well in the field, huge amount of iron and of course lead everywhere. Its just outside a small village… 😊

So, so cool! With all that you've found thus far it would be interesting to take a ground penetrating radar over the field and see what lies deeper.

I was struck how similar the item is to a thread cutting die. But a die is perfectly symmetrical and the found item is not. A die is made of steel, so would be magnetic. Often they are plated with chromium so might last well in the soil. I suspect your item was made long before there were dies and it had some other use.

I'm going to go with Roman made. Scales could just suggest something aquatic. Possibly Mediterranean Monk Seals.

period bronzes.
