Good evening everyone,

Many of you probably remember the old JA. McDonald homesite which I pounded 100's of hours last year and found mostly per-1900 coins including 2 LC and 12 IH's, all in the 1860-1880 range. Well today I couldn't resist going back over and pounding it some more before it's gone. The house has been for sale and has just been reduced so who knows how much longer I'll be able to hunt there. This place has become somewhat personal to me. I know the guy who lived there and even found his grave at the cemetery. He was a wealthy man and played a roll in the early days of Woodstock. He was one of the original settlers who moved to Woodstock Ohio from Woodstock Vermont, thus the name was given to this small rural town. I would like to buy it but have a nice house of my own. Besides, it's 175 years old. It was built in 1835.

Enough of my story telling. Anyways, I hunted it for about 2 hours like I always do. Dug every signal. After an hour into the hunt i thought I was going to get skunked. Well, dug a1908 IH. Not in too bad of shape. Then on my way back to my car I stumbled upon a nice Green 1871 at 5 inches. After a rinses under the water and a soft brush and a manicure it came out really nice. Just a little wear but very nice coin indeed. Also dug a National Distillers cap at 8 inches. Any idea on age. The Pat. date is 1875 and ??

This brings the total to 14 IH's at this place and 2 LC's. I was hoping on some more of the big pennies but not today. Just goes to show you that no place ever gets hunted out completely....... believe me. Lot's of hours and dedication and lot's of patience. Dig every signal and swing in every angle possible. Coins will come out if they are there.

Good luck and keep at it. Thanks for looking.....Ron
I just saw a 58 dollar price for one just as good. Any Ideas?? I have had a few PM's stating the coin is a key date. I'm just a dumb jarhead and didn't know that. So, we'll see what happens from here. Thanks for all of the input and comments.

Congrates! By the way, did you check the back of that 1908 to see if it's a "S"? (6:00, on the bottom) Amazing how you can find a coin that's 37 years older than your 1871, and it's in crappier condition. Whitman folder, be filled!
Carl

No S, of course. That 1908 is actually in good condition. I just didn't clean it as good. Most of the 14 IH's I have found so far there have been green. However I have had a few browns. This particular one is smooth, not coarse. Just needs cleaned better. It has very good detail too and is not worn.

The soil in this area is very good, granular and dark. However there are some spots around where the barn and buildings were that is clay if you dig down deep enough. This clay was obviously brought in at one time for fill. I have found no coins at this site that have been corroded or ate up.

Great find Crazy. I would say VF grade. Congrats on a stellar coin! The Hogge :headbang:

that is one great looking indy. I've gotten a few so far this year; a '64 (no L),'81 and a '05. None of them are in as good a shape as that '71. Kudos on your find. In your site pics, I noticed a shallow depression in between the tree and the shed. Have you checked that out yet?
