After a week of no digs I finally got back out and checked 1 of my possible pits / hut. Plenty of big iron, a few bullets, a broken bottle , some window glass and a beautiful INK WELL. Most all targets were below 2 ' and I hit a hard pack at around 3' . I never found any color except for what I think was rotted leather. I probed the side walls with a John K. Singing Probe but ran out of targets and came home happy as heck with a big sense of accomplishment on digging my 1st pit.

Hey JDug,

Congratz on a nice umbrella. I'd like to see mo'betta photos of it. What's the base look like?

Your hole looks mighty narrow for a privy. As other's have urged, I'd re-probe and expand yer dig...

JDug was this the pit you sent me a video a few days ago about??

No I couldn't get to that one because of the weeds, but it's within 10' of it.

There's something in the bottom that looks and moves like a hair.

Nice going on your first pit dig. You could easily have gotten skunked, but you came home with a few keepers. That umbrella ink looks a bit different than ones I've dug at CW sites. Yours has that ledge just under the spout which none of mine have. But it has to be period. I've included a couple pics of what mine look like.

Hey JDug,

Nice pontil, sir! The "hair" is called a "worm" by the bottle folk. A thread of glass, that adds to the very pleasing crudity of this umbrella. Well done!

That looks like a great spot and looks like pinpointed that pit very well !

Nice excavation work JDug. Nice ink well and bullet finds.

Nice hunt JDug. I want to get one of John's probes for DIV. This next one sounds like the perfect time to use it. I have dug a few pits but nothing major found. My buddy Phil dug a great Log Cabin bitters bottle on his first pit a few hunts ago. Congrats on the ink well.
