Went digging with a couple of friends in Golden Gate Park, but had very little luck. Fortunately, after lunch we decided to hit another park and within the first half-hour this giant 14k gold ring popped out of the ground.

It weights 12 grams, and has a 22mm inside diameter (that's about a size 12.5 if you're counting at home). This is by far the biggest ring I've found and I'm pretty stoked about it. I might be spending a bit more time in parks instead of chasing oldies.

VDI 50! makes you wonder how many of those rings I left behind because I was tired of digging pennies. Well done Greg407!

Congrats on that NICE BIG chunk of GOLD!:occasion14:

Nice find. Do you need permits to go to those parks? Also, any tips for areas in the Bay Area to detect? (within an hour or 2 drive) Thanks!

handsoap, Greg is right: SF city parks has no specific rules that say "no metal detecting". And no "permits" etc... Simply silent on the issue, with nothing said either way. And that's a good thing :) (hence, not prohibited or dis-allowed).

But that's not to say that you still don't need to use a little ... uhhh.... discretion when hunting them. I mean, of course, avoid lookie-lou busy-bodies. If they're maintaining (mowing etc...) the park that day, choose somewhere else. If there's a ball-game going on (or big crowds, etc...) then probably not a good time. Detectors are an eye-magnet that draws stares of curious folks. Thus the less attention/scrutiny, the better. If there's no rules specific, then the best tactic is to KEEP it that way. And the best way to keep it that way, is to not wear big-bullseyes on your back begging for scrutiny. So go at low traffic off-times, and it's not been a problem.

SF parks though have been hit hard, and some are very junky. The upscale older nicer ones, that used to give lots of silver and "4-star deepie silvers" are typically hammered hard. You gotta be a tough cookie nowadays to pull choice silver from some of them :) Some others might still give up classic silver/wheatie signals, but ..... you gotta do your homework, know your machine, and pay-your-dues to learn when/where/how :)

One beautiful ring !

Great ring man.I found a white gold diamond ring in Jefferson square and a art carved wedding band at a square by Nob Hill(forgot the name) back in 1980 with my old Compass 94-B detector.

What a honker!congrats!
