I've seen several similar examples that have been described as hammers and horse tether weights

although that 1 thinking logically looks like it would make a very good axe

I see a lot of people question whether or not ones like yours would be an axe based on the placement of the groove. I always considered the possibility that many of them started out the way yours looks. then after 1 side has been resharpened to the point of be coming too short the edge was ground down completely and sharpening began on the other side. it would beat starting a whole new piece.

It is called a fishnet weight and can be found all across the eastern seaboard to the Mississippi river. They have been found in texas but I have not seen them posted to much from out west. They are mostly found next to rivers among the cobbles. Some can be found in the fields next to the river. Never to far from the river though. I find them all the time on the Delaware River and they can vary in size. The largest one i have found is over 12" and was confiscated when i found out the hard way in the beginning not to search park land. I was 18 at the time and they cut me break. Oh well it sits i a storage locker some where now...........................nice find!!...................GTP

Thanks for replying!!!!! I have found many net sinkers and none have been nearly this big. Also if ya look at the pic the one side has been worked. I respect your opinion but I don't think its a weight.

Thanks for all the info, My pics may no show it very well but there is no grove in the stone on either side. Do you still think it could be an axe?

I'm sorry about that... well now. that makes it a little more interesting. I think we all sometimes overlook a little the fact that not everything we find is finished. I know I'm guilty of that. we're all pretty use to the fact that points have pre-forms. as I'm sure did most tools that were going to have to be made quite often. what is your gut feeling? when you hold it in your hand does it seem like an axe head? if so.. that's what I would put my money on
