I posted this in the past and didn't get an ID on it. Figured I'd try one more time before I throw it into the lead bucket.

The top stem is brass or copper and the rest of it is lead. I scraped some off and used a lead test kit to determine that much.

If I need to take more pics let me know.

Some great photos of the crows foot battery on them links. Thanks. It also tells me what some of them copper things across the years were I had came across. LOL

HOLY COW FOLKS!!!

How in the world did you come to this conclusion?!?!?

I would NEVER have considered this a part of a cell! I also didn't think we would get an identification on it!

Looking at it now I can clearly see where the wire would have been hooked up and how the front rounded portion would have conformed to the side of a beaker!

Once again the great minds of TNet have come through! Glad I didn't take the MAP gas to it!

MAJOR kudos to Chipveres and Lostcauses! :headbang:

I think I'll add a green check to this one!

LOL I should have know this earlier as I collect electric books prior to 1900. Most have a page of two devoted to such. It was one of them I should know what this is things, and when some one said a place to attach wire it reminded me of a battery. Like I said I now know what some of them strange copper pieces I have found across the years go to..

I have contacted the land owner of the property I found this on to inform her of what this is. When I showed my initial finds to her she was very interested in this piece. She is HEAVY into the history of her town (Brashear, TX) and county. They have a little museum there and I have offered to place this into a deep frame with the print out of the patent info on the rear portion with the "critter" sitting on the bottom.

I think she'll be thrilled about this.

I also added a link to this thread for her to see how things are identified by the great folks on Treasure Net!

Thanks again all,

By the way it was not just glass gars used with these, Coper containers as well as pottery or crockery were also used. So if you found some of that with it, it may have been a part of it.

I found a pic of what this thing looked like BEFORE it was all broken up and worn down.

Thanks for the hints folks, I've found LOTS about this tonight after seeing your identification!

Going through some of the other finds I made at the site I think I have a couple of the pieces that may have broken off of it. Not that they would do me any good, but it's cool to have them as well.
