Stephen Girard & the Opium Trade?

Reb, when we say that the duel was over the honor of a woman, is this to say the insult was directly aimed at her, or is it possible that the insult was aimed at her family, etc., perhaps even in her presence? So when we say it was over a woman's honor that's pretty broad ground.
Risky behavour in Bedford county ,none the less!
...and it involved a Hancock, part of the extended Risqué family in Bedford and Botecourt counties.

Now you are squarely on top of it all! And I can tell you this, the Laffite memoirs are authentic! No doubt about that now..... And there's even more "connexions" directly back to Bedford Co., when we explore the history of the Long expedition (James Long) and his defeated cause...
The 1819 LONG-BELL EXPEDITION was a scientific and military recon of the Plaines, gathering information on population and resources, and most importantly, mapping the territory.

THE DUEL...? Julia was a HANCOCK, descended from JOHN HANCOCK, signer of ORIGINAL DOI; AND! J.B. Risque's wife was a HANCOCK... ALL in the family. JB's wife died before he & their 2 kids moved to Lynchburg, Va., after the Duel...

Different Long.

This James Long
LONG, JAMES | The Handbook of Texas Online| Texas State Historical Association (TSHA)

There were men from the Bedford Co. area accompanying him. Long was also at the Galveston Island area. He was also at New Orleans when a lot of others were there. Long wasn't in the Texas area just once.

Long, Laffite, Bolivar, the refugees, in just these interest we have four different factions at work in Texas. But who, exactly, was backing them? Laffitte turned on Long but he aided the refugees and those of Bolivar. If men from the Bedford County area were involved in all of this, and with these different factions, then their purposes/ideals would have been somewhat different as well.

VIRGINIA...? WHO were these men from Bedford County, VIRGINIA. Sounds MORE like ppl from Bedford County, PA (Pennsylvania)... dunno.

Actually, an effort was made to actively recruit men from the area. But here's the interesting thing....not all of these interest were the same or perpetuated by the same sources. In a simple effort to explain this let's use republicans and democrats as example, pretty much the same general concept. Both factions can be trying to achieve the same goal with slightly different plans and outcomes. In other words, both interest revolved around Texas but they were of different paths and outcomes.

This is why Laffitte turned on Long, because their ultimate purpose wasn't aimed at the same outcome. Now imagine that there were men from the Bedford area on opposite sides of all of this. Using our Republican and Democrat example, then political friction becomes a factor. Texas needs to be won but how to best go about it? This created difference of opinion, a divide.

It appears that Laffitte was willing to aid just about anyone, Bolivar, the refugees, but not James Long. If the entire goal was to colonize Texas then why not aid Long, what was different?

Speaking of smoking guns, Stephen Girard was also a gun runner for Simon Bolivar in South America. Brings back the line from Jean Lafitte's Memoirs concerning Feb 24, 1821:"to Mr Hall, Mr Campbell, Mr Sherman, and to those of Bolivar to keep our promise and distribute the gold to the indicated places". And-""Mr Ward, Mr Kingsley, and Mr Peabody seem to me to be very honest, nice men...'. Peabody was also involved in the opium trade, Mathew (Mexico) Sherman was Capt of the Canton Co's ship, TORPEDO, and the Canton Co was owned by William Patterson of Baltimore , whose daughter, Elizabeth, was married to Jerome Bonaparte, who was in Richmond during the 2nd year of the Confederate War.

now your getting hot!!! Now what you need to know is which Jerome was in Richmond then? Father or son? Also what you didn't mention was who worked for Girard that ran the guns and was arrested for doing so. He was also an officer for Laffite and a New Orleans attorney. If you have all this then you'll also know who or which Mr Hall this is.

Now, here's what the smoke is hiding.....

Our opium/Salt Lick/China Thomas Beale....are you ready for this......"this brings into play the East India Trading Company and the British element." Sort of puts a whole new spin on why Thomas Beale was out west....yes? If Girard & Beale were in the same opium/China trade, and if Girard was hooked up with Laffitte, then why did Laffitte really turn on James Long? Girard didn't go bust, Beale did. Beale appears in Bedford County and makes deposits that require a third party, Morriss, why? To this there is a ten-year term attached.....why?

Are we connecting the dots yet, making the required connexions? Anyone wanting to bet if China Beale/East India Trading Company/British interest was heavily invested in the west? :laughing7:

The Jerome that divorced Elizabeth Patterson.During the 1st year of the Confederate War,Prince Jerome Bonaparte with his new wife traveled to the United States on his yacht, PRINCE JEROME. Aug 3,1861 he visited with Lincoln at the White House, and from Aug 6-9, visited Virginia, Manassas Battlefield, Mt Vernon, playing the role of "royal" celebrity guest of both sides of the War. Jerome commented that he was not impressed with the Lincolns, or with the Confederate army. Mary Chestnut, in her diary, commented on his snobbery.

AGAIN... Bedford County, VIRGINIA or... Bedford County, Pennsylvania...?

About "Beale"......your author even tells you that this is your Beale, as by his best guess Beale was from some western portion of the state, or such, so he is pointing a direct finger at Salt Lick and the China Beale. Case closed....you now have the right Beale.

Western part "of the state" (Virginia) is Botetourt County (Fincastle, Va.), where "Beale's Rifles" (TB, Sr.) was from for Battle of New Orleans (War of 1812); Co. A - Blue Ridge Rifles or Co. I - Mountain Rifles. BTW, Roanoke, Va. was known as BIG LICK, Va. "in those days

Salt Lick....not, Big Lick. Also, Bedford county was much larger back in the day, as was Virginia. He said he guessed, from some western potion of the state, "in loose reference".

Salt Lick Creek is a creek in the counties of Knot, and Floyd, in Eastern KY. Not too far from the VA line, and about 250-300 miles from Bedford.

Back in the day it was part of the Virgina colonies. Kentucky also has a strange political history that plays something of a role in the differences explained. For instance, trade from New Orleans was prohibited, and at one time General Wilkinson thought Kentucky should cede to Spanish control, or something to that nature, but his suggestion was put down. Also, there was great political divide that existed in early Virgina that you might want to explore.
