I'm going down to my hunting lease this afternoon and spend the night and get up at daylight and go explore the old stage coach stop site again. I mentioned this site on an earlier post. Anyway, there was an old weigh station and rest stop at the site at one time. You can see where the old road came through the woods by the indentations and smaller trees than those surrounding. What I saw if it there were some large foundation stones where the station stood and there is supposed to ge some graves off to one side but I haven't found them. I plan to cut some large weeds and see if I can figure out how it was layed out. Might not do much detecting this trip but may try a little on all metal just to see how deep things are and what I will need to dig them out. It's so hot I probably won't spend but a couple of hours there very early! Will post what I find out when I get back Sunday night. JIM

jimmi,

I bet you find a ton of good stuff. Lots of traffic and money always changed hands at weigh stations. Now my little personal story to add to the mix.. Last summer I finally got the nerve up to ask the owners of a home on my parents street to hunt their property. I have ask probably a hundred or so property owners over the years to hunt but for some reason, I always shied away from this one. The main reason I did was because about six years ago, some "yuppies" bought the house and really sank a lot of money into renovating it. I just knew what the answer would be if I ask and I was right, the answer was NO. The couple that owned the house were nice as could be and gave me a complete history of the house. The house was built in the 1790's and served as a sage coach weigh station along Lebanon Pike between Lebanon TN and Nashville TN. Over the years, it has hosted such guests as Sam Houston, who was a Lawyer in Lebanon, Tennessee (prior to moving to Texas and having a small town named after him) (ha ha) and Andrew Jackson, one of our more distinguished Presidents. The home also served a area command post for occupying Union troops. Well, long story short, I'll be back in the states next week and back in TN the week after that and just guess who's door I'll be knocking on again!!!

This stage line is about 23 miles outside Tahlequah, OK that is the present day Capital of the Cherokee Nation. It came from Muskogee, OK that is part of the Creek Nation. I don't know if it has anything to do with the Indian tribes or not? It is roughly located in Cookson, OK a small community. It is about 300 yds from the Cookson family home, but it is not the original Cookson family home place. This family is related and occupies land handed down by the original Cookson family. I don't know this for a fact but I suspect the family ran the stage line rest stop. The occupant of the home is an elderly lady named Cookson of course and recently lost her husband. She gave me permission to search and I plan to talk to her a little more next time I go down to the lease. There may be more of the descendants living around the area that I can talk to? I wouild like to find the original home place site. Wouldn't that be something? I love to unravel these old timey mysteries. To mew that's part of the lure of metal detecting. JIM
