The other day went out to do a little shooting out in the middle of no where 50 miles from the nearest no where. Stopped at a spring to let my dogs water. Knowing this is one of the majior routes of any one headed west in the early days and all the treasure/Cache/ stories I have read in the past. I am thinking any day now any thing is possible.
I am standing on the edge of this spring and I look deep down in the crystal clear water about 10 feet deep I spy a box. It is about 1 1/2 foot long by about 1 foot wide. Moss and mud covered the box but you could see the outline. I wanted to jump in dive down and grab it to see what it is. However the temps were like 28 windy I will go back when it warms. Couple questions 1. How long if it is wooden would it last under water. And what type of box is that size? And what are your thoughts? The box is in the deepest part of the spring where the underground water enters the spring through broken up bedrock big rock. It was all I could do to make out the image.

Wow sounds neat! I think wood could last in cold water for a very long time, oxygen is what aids in the decay, and the microbes that breath oxygen and eat your wood and not much oxygen 10 ft down. Ever seen Swamp Loggers on history chanel? Some guys go trolling the rivers looking for submerged logs for lumber. Theyre preserved from a hundred or more years ago from when loggers would float trees down river to the sawmills.

As for the size, all I ccan think of is a wooden ammo box but That would be a little too moddern I think. Like this:

But back then everything probably came in wooden boxes or crates since there was no cardboard or plastic.
Bear grylls goes ice skinny dipping all the time, just have a fire ready for when you come out. Maybe take a hand crank winch, like the ones on a boat trailer. You can tie it on a tree or rock and crank the box out (a box that size filled with gold is gonna weigh a ton!) For the tip just throw me a nugget if it is full of gold!

There are still Indian carved wooden canoes in the bottom of some springs near where I live.

Yes about 15 Years ago an Indian Canoe was
found in a Creek about 6 mile north of me.

wood can't rot without air

Thanks for the replies!! Now I am more curious then I was when I first spotted it. You guys got me going. I checked out the boxes you all posted and I guess it could be either. That is if it is wood.
I never gave it much thought at the time but the farther I drove away the more I wished I had jumped in. Don't know anyone with a wet suit. I think I can deal with personal shrinkage. I will get some pics before I jump in. Need to get my camera and some rope a pry bar just in case it is stuck. I swim better naked.
Wyopaul you ought to take that Minelab up to Long park in the Unitas. It is not to far from where you live. Supposedly eighty some thousand in double gold eagles buried there abouts.
I think I will go this one alone since I have already found it. I had company when I found it but didn't press the isue about retriveing it. sss

A suggestion is to get a fine (but tough) net around the box and lift it out with a rope.
That way if the metal fasteners on the box failon the way up,
The contents will be contained in the netting.

Rutnbuck ... if you are going to wait for any significant amount of time you may want to consider disgiusing the box with stones on top of it ... coz if you saw it, a lot of others using the crossing may also see it and take action on it.

Looks like you might have to get into cold water at some stage ... get enough valeline to coat your skin and it will insulate you in the coldest waters

Your best bet in getting that thing out might be to secure straps around and underneath it (maybe lift it with a pry bar to get the straps under)... then lift it to the surface with those lift bags that divers use to float large items to the surface. Then you can move it to more shallow area, which would made it easier to remove from the water and load.

These are all great ideas, but take someone even if its the wife to help if you get into trouble hypothermia happens quick especially to older people. I would have a thick wool blanket to wrap up into as soon as its out! got to get rewarmed! to go thur all that and then have to spend time in the hospital reccovering just might not be worth what is in the box. That size would fit a gold/silver payroll box. Take a 3-4" piece of PVC pipe by however deep you think it is, strap a waterproof flashlight on the outside and illuminate the box, then look thur the pipe you should be able to see better. I hope its a box of double eagles!

If you think it could be metal, tie a magnet on a rope and let it down on it. These magnets can pick up a lot of weight under water. i keep one in my treasure hunting box. They will lift a boat motor up with no problem. If it is a wooden box , maybe rig up a tool with an ice tong ( used for carrying ice blocks) with a rope. It shouldn't be to heavy under water.
Good luck
Happy Trails

hope u have the GPS Cords. Because if u dont.......... u might not

find it again. Rivers and streams have a silly way of covering things

up~ after a storm or a melt!

Best of Luck with this - i will be reading :read2:

Wow! I thought you would take some time before jumping in and getting it! Please tell us of your adventure and what you discovered inside the box!!! How long were you in the water and how long dig it take you to thaw out :coffee:

Heck I couldn't sleep last night knowing I left you all hanging. That and I don't have anyone else to tell of my adventure and find. I spent about 1 hour typing and trying to post pics last night only to loose it all when my files were to big. So I will give it another go.
Yesterday morning when I woke I started reading all the post's on here. Holy Smokes did it get me going. After contemplating and curiosity set in I figured the only way I would know is grab my gear and get going. I load up the Truck and hit the road.
Thoughts of how to sell gold and silver took my mind away to the point it caused a near crash not paying attention to the traffic on the bumper car speed way.
It was still cold outside and to early to go jump in some lake. So I got to thinking about this cute little waitress I took a liking to. I best figured I better stop grab a bite to see her. She is finer then a speckled pup on a firetruck. She wasn't there so I figured it would be a good time to eat.
I am sitting there and a old buddy /coworker/treasure hunter/miner hickabilly happened to walk in. Hadn't seen him in years. So I tell him of my adventure. He tells me of a couple first hand Spanish gold hides he near found. But that is a story in itself I need to fallow up on. Parting way he tells me if he would have known I would be there he would have taken care of me but forgot his gun. That and if I ended up with a ton of gold he would split with me. "Some thing like he would take 90 percent and I could have the other 50 percent. I am out of there.
Need to size some pic be right back.

On the way out I am thinking of thousands of immigrants, stages, mail carriers, pioneer, pony express, army, and hundreds of others that used this route. It is called Hastings Cut Off. Where several thousands headed west or east had to travel. It is one of the few springs where they could water their stock on the Great Salt Lake Desert. In order to avoid the high peaks of the Stansbury Range and the Great Salt Lake. All were funneled past Hastings cut off. No doubt many a treasure are near by. Last stop before the barren Great Salt Lake Desert of hundreds of miles. Jack Rabbits are known to carry canteens.
I arrive at the spring still early and cold. So I wander around for a bit only to find another treasure a pocket knife. While I am poking around a heard of range cows came to the spring to water. Not wanting to rush them I wait. 26 of the critters knowing this by counting their legs and dividing by 4. The cows leave and I haven't figured out a way to get the box with out getting wet.
So I strip down and making my way to the waters edge freezing cold 35 degrees and little breezy.
Just about to hop in I see this truck headed in my direction. I am thinking all kinds stuff like I don't want them to know what I am doing so I slip on my shirt and pants hop back in my truck. I am already cold. They leave. Moment of truth I strip down make a plan to be as fast as I can because it is to cold.
