UDATED!!!**SpanishTrail half Dollar??

Hey all....I normally dont post in this section. Im no way NEAR the CRH's on this site. But i do dable a bit.

I went to the bank on Sat and asked for my typical $100 box of nickels, and aksed the lady if she had any half dollars.

Well she said she had 3, but told me one was a commertive she thinks , She told me it was a "Texas" Half dollar. Which made no sense to me..until i saw that it had long horns on the front.

Anyway...I went home thinking it was part of the "State" quarters thing they are doing on halfs now, but it was odd because it really doesnt have a date on it..it just says 1536-1936.

So i looked it up...and saw them..but it said it was worth like 1500...I know some people hit the jackpot..but i dont think i did..I weighed it and it weighs right..sized it up to another half dollar, and it was looked the same, just the toning is weird to me..Im FAR from being an expert of coins.
Have anyone seen this coin before? does this toning look right? Im scared to clean it, just incase it was real

Either way, its a cool looking coin for .50C

***** UPDATE*****

Well, I made it to the Coin shop yesterday. Met a really nice gentleman that seemed very interested in my coin. It was crazy because he locked the door behind me, which sorta freaked me out.

But anyway...He looked at it for a few minutes..weighed it and compared it to some other halves for size reference. And then he pretty much told me it wasnt the real deal :sadsmiley:..he told me that it appears to be purposely made to decieve someone or was a piece of jewlery. The ONLY good thing about it was that he confirmed it was Silver, but he said that the toning was not geuine, which makes him think it was made to decieve someone.

He actually offered me 20 dollars for it, but I told him I would rather keep it. Man, it was a tough drive home, but I guess thats how this game works

Thanks everyone for all the comments and support!

I still think im going to call the bank and tell them how great the customer service is at this bank.

Sorry guys...Wish I had a different outcome from all this

Happy Hunting!

Congratulations. It looks genuine. It is on my bucket list to add to my classical commemorative collection. Although, I'll be most likely buying mine. The cow's head is a tribute to Cabeza de Vaca the Spanish Explorer. The back obviously depicts the Old Spanish Trail - modern day Highway-90. Most aren't aware that the Eastern Zero Mile Waymarker for the OST is in St. Augustine, FL. It is a massive 6' round coquina sphere that is presently located outside of the current Visitor's Center.

awesome info, thanks

and for the record it would be awesome if they started doing state half dollars

not from a coin roll hunting perspective though, state quarters dilute out of the available supply and bring added attention to the hobby

I think the whole time I've been here lurking and as a member I have never seen a CRH banner find, but to me this is definitely a banner find all the way.

Nice find. Looks real but the Chinese sell complete commemoratives sets nowadays. If you plan to sell would be worth submitting for grading to at least authenticate.

That is awesome! I hope it's genuine. Amazing find! Congrats.

Hey Guys!...Thanks for all the comments!...Im trying to stay postive. Its funny because im the bigest skeptic until i get hard proof.
I called a coin shop yesterday on the way home and set up a meeting with the guy today. So im keeping my fingers crossed.

The one thing that makes me feel a little more confident is the fact i got it from a bank, not that they dont get bogus money, but if this was a yard sale or fela market find, i would know it was a repro or novelty item.

i will keep ya'll posted!

Hey Jim, I totally understand about what China is doing with our coinage, which makes me sick. But yes, IF i did ever sell this, which I dont see me doing, it would be slabbed and 100% authentic..I would NEVER screw someone over like that

Diggin, I've seen numerous examples of this type, and there is nothing about it that gives me reservations about it's authenticity. That being said, your coin has been mis-handled over the years and shows the effects. It doesn't diminish the rarity, but it will diminish the value. That being said, I watched and almost pulled the trigger on a specimen that had been in a fire and showed it. It ended up realizing approx. $300. Congratulations again.

Don't do a sound test... you may just ding the rim for no good reason. A coin shop should be able to take you as a walk in anytime.

Yea, Im keeping it put until i get a professionals opinion.

The weird part is.. and i know im probally over thinking it , But I was thinking last night how great it would be to be the Real deal...but at the same time...Someone lost a valueable coin from thier collection..again, i am totally over thinking it, But me being a coin collector..this would be a heartbreaker to lose

Don't over think this. I sympathize, but what can you do? I suppose you could put forth the effort to find the previous owner, which potentially would open yourself up to being taken advantage of. Or, you could enjoy your good fortune! Call it karma - you're getting paid back for something.

D-N-D , Great find ! Yes the teller obviously gets a rather nicer box of chocolates and a card ! I think it's amazing to see your avatar
pic of the long horn , and then to see the design on the coin - some kind of amazing coincidence !!! ???

Thanks!...I plan on rewarding her majorly if this is legit...and yea..I changed my Avatar a month or 2 back...maybe it was a good luck thing..lol..Who knows...But hell...everythign here n texas is long horns it seems :occasion14:

I wouldnt go over and beyond on the rewarding- she already said she was going to give it to her husband so if you tip her off any more than necessary you might not get any more from her but just by telling her thanks that was a nice add to my collection and giving her a nice small reward might help with future finds as well- maybe im in the majority on this but I guess go with what you feel is right-

-------------------------------------
just keep stacking, just keep stacking, stacking stacking stacking

I agree with this. The best "gift" to give a teller IMO is to fire in a letter to his/her corporate office stating what excellent customer service he/she provides you with. Those can actually be the deciding factor when it comes raise/promotion time.

Very cool find but (and I really wish I could say it was real for you) it is not genuine.

It is very easy to place the 2 pics (yours and the genuine one in a link sent by Mackaydon) side by side and you will see many differences. I will not list them all but most notably the style and thickness of the digits in the date (especially the style of the 1 and the 5), the designers initials at 4 o'clock, the 2 or 3 "blobs" at the top of the tree on yours, not on the genuine one and that "patina" is man-made all day long......

Like I said, good for you for finding it but I wanted to put in my 2 cents before any more excitement ensued and you were buying donuts needlessly. :-)

Sorry to be a downer on this thread, sure would have been nice....

How did you ascertain the details that you listed above off Diggin's find? The pictures are much too small to distinguish serifs on the date.

Forget all these tests - send it off to ngc or pcgs! As far "I hate being a skeptic...it just seemed to easy...I couldnt imagine who would have brought this in to the bank." this is why all of us do this and makes this hobby possible.

As far as the bank teller - I would keep quiet about it. Tell her about the $1500 coin and you will never see a find there again. Don't open pandora's box. She sold you the coin - she did her job. Thats it.
