Hey all....I normally dont post in this section. Im no way NEAR the CRH's on this site. But i do dable a bit.

I went to the bank on Sat and asked for my typical $100 box of nickels, and aksed the lady if she had any half dollars.

Well she said she had 3, but told me one was a commertive she thinks , She told me it was a "Texas" Half dollar. Which made no sense to me..until i saw that it had long horns on the front.

Anyway...I went home thinking it was part of the "State" quarters thing they are doing on halfs now, but it was odd because it really doesnt have a date on it..it just says 1536-1936.


So i looked it up...and saw them..but it said it was worth like 1500...I know some people hit the jackpot..but i dont think i did..I weighed it and it weighs right..sized it up to another half dollar, and it was looked the same, just the toning is weird to me..Im FAR from being an expert of coins.
Have anyone seen this coin before? does this toning look right? Im scared to clean it, just incase it was real

Either way, its a cool looking coin for .50C

Well, I made it to the Coin shop yesterday. Met a really nice gentleman that seemed very interested in my coin. It was crazy because he locked the door behind me, which sorta freaked me out.

But anyway...He looked at it for a few minutes..weighed it and compared it to some other halves for size reference. And then he pretty much told me it wasnt the real deal ..he told me that it appears to be purposely made to decieve someone or was a piece of jewlery. The ONLY good thing about it was that he confirmed it was Silver, but he said that the toning was not geuine, which makes him think it was made to decieve someone.

He actually offered me 20 dollars for it, but I told him I would rather keep it. Man, it was a tough drive home, but I guess thats how this game works

I still think im going to call the bank and tell them how great the customer service is at this bank.

I would assume it was minted in 1935.(as the coin says, not your post).

I tried to look it up too, and see ebay auctions of 1500ish! Holy crap what a find!

now that is truly a fantastic find! now that your mr. money bags go out and get yourself a coin price guide. they have a section for these commemoratives, there are tons of them all with really low mintages. If I recall TX has one of the lower mintages hence it's value. I think you actually did hit it big here. I'm jealous, that is one fantastic coin. sometimes lightning does strike ya man

Thanks for the quick replies!...I wont be doing any cleaning on it...I hate being a skeptic...it just seemed to easy...I couldnt imagine who would have brought this in to the bank. The craziest part was the teller told me she was going to take it home to her husband , who lives on a farm and raises Cattle, but then told me it would probally just sit in a drawer somewhere...thank god she didnt take it home

This is the best CRHing find I have ever seen. <-- I have only been reading about this for 2 years, so not long.

As far as $$ - it beats the gold 2.5 dollar coins we occasionally see.

Hey Palidin....That was the FIRST thing I checked, but it passed that test and im scared to test it with a Silver Testing kit...Which after seeing what it could possibly be worth, that ISNT even an option. I think Im going to go to harbor freight and check the diameter. because it seems to the the same thickness and size of a typical Half, and it weighs the same..

Also, be certain you are comaring weight of a 90% silver half - because that is what it would be.

A micromoeter is not really nessesary - you can should be able to stack it with silve,r or clad half dollars and see if its the same size ( sounds like you did )

NExt step would be take it to coin shop, and have the gentlemen behind the counter take a gander at it.

I think there's a high likely hood of it being real. of all the coins to fake, I can't imagine a commemorative of that nature would be one. too few people know they exist

Congratulations. It looks genuine. It is on my bucket list to add to my classical commemorative collection. Although, I'll be most likely buying mine. The cow's head is a tribute to Cabeza de Vaca the Spanish Explorer. The back obviously depicts the Old Spanish Trail - modern day Highway-90. Most aren't aware that the Eastern Zero Mile Waymarker for the OST is in St. Augustine, FL. It is a massive 6' round coquina sphere that is presently located outside of the current Visitor's Center.
