I finally got out after various distractions and a snow storm. Of course it was only for 45 minutes, but I made it count.

It came from a site dating to 1645 that has produced many excellent finds over the last few years I've been hunting it. The site is my "happy place" and has brought me both joy and misery (I've been skunked scores of times).

I dig a few bits and I get a whisper high signal on my Deus. Only about 3-4" down was this little beauty.

In my 3 year olds hands it looks bigger.

A couple of buttons and a skeleton key loop, along with a bunch of iron nails was the take for the hunt.

I believe it's a Philip IV 1/2 reale, 1650's to 1665, possibly Mexico City mint. I'm not good with cob ID's so if someone can confirm it would be excellent since I'm having some trouble with this one.

Spanish cobs for me is the ultimate, and nothing beats the feeling of holding one. What a blessing after about 2 weeks of no hunting.

Cheers and good digs everyone

Steve

Congrats. Found in North Jersey?

Congrats on the cob Steve. They don't come along too often (unless you live in SE VA)

Yep, I texted a couple of the usual suspects down in Va. and they were like "whoopti-do" lols. They were stoked for me, but yeah, they're a little spoiled with cobs;)

Wow!! What a find after no hunting for 2 weeks and to get a positive ID, Awesome!!

Thanks DS - and yes, I was lucky to get an ID, especially with a worn half reale. Cheers

Ho hum

Sweet silver and It's a nice thick one too! You, buddy, are on fire and I hope it continues for you. I'd take that cob over the 7 thousand bullets Brad dug. FU Steve!!

It's been awesome (and painful) watching you, Dan, and Bill pop out cobs like tic-tacks while I was stuck digging plain old milled Spanish. Jk. But alas, it finally was my turn again. Lol.

And re: Brad. I heard his pants kept falling down with all the lead he was carrying in his belt pouch. Evan is traumatized. Lol

Hahaha. It's true, and I think I pinched a nerve in my hip from all the weight in my pouch. I put it all on a glass shelf in a display case tonight, then had to Google to see how much weight that thickness of glass could hold.

Killer cob man. I'd absolutely take that over 7 thousand bullets. Haha. Keep it rolling man, looking forward to the next.

Excellent find! Congrats!! :occasion14:
New England winter has been cruel in 17 as I have been in similar shoes but get out when I can... even if it only for a lil while.
Keep at it and hit that site again!!!

2017 was quite mild in Jersey. Two big snows and some frozen ground was the extent of it. Winter of 2014-2015 was the last bad one, where it was frozen solid from January to April

Congratulations on the nice COB recovery!

Lol. This one caught me off guard. I was 100% sure I was digging a deep nail or iron chunk. The signal on the Deus was more of a "smear" instead of a nice beep. The funny part is I've literally been over that exact spot 20 times, as well as 3-4 friends. Totally missed it on the CTX. The Deus however, for it on the third attempt;)

You're doing very well lately! Congrats on a nice and tiny Spanish Silver i most likely never get. It's a high on the wishlist items.
With our hoarde we realized how important swinging speed and direction can be. The "smear" you're talking about was often the only signal noticeable. Trying to get a better signal on another angle-NO signal at all. Gridding from different directions can help a lot on a promising site. The Deus really stands out on difficult terrain!
