It was in the 30's here in my area of NC this afternoon, but I had to get out. I only had a few hours to detect so I hit a place close to home that I just gained permission to a few weeks ago. It was built in the 1800's and has many acres of soybean fields behind it and across the street. My first trip here yielded an ornate silver pocketwatch cover and a 1940 Merc. Today was my second time here and after digging up some coins (modern & one wheat) and a few relics in the yard, I took to the back field. Digging a few pieces of crappe' (trash) out in the field and freezing my backside off :o I set my discrimination way up to weed out the junk. I started to work my way back towards the house and got a good signal. Here's the results of that wonderful signal:

It turned out to be a 1945 Standing Walking Liberty half. :hello2: Not really old or rare, but it is my first large silver after all these years of detecting. :icon_thumleft: I love detecting in large fields and finding something decent out in the middle of nowhere. It's a great feeling. :love4:

Any idea what the latch looking thing is? It says "O.T. Co. - Pat. 1898 , 1903, 1914."

Great job! The Walking Liberty is my favorite coin design. The OTC relic would be a specialty tool of some sort. You could probably find out by the patent#. They still make most of the specialty tools for car manufacturers.

Thanks Tin. I've always liked the design of the IH's and the Merc dime, but you are right, the Walking Liberty is a beautiful design too.
The OTC piece turned out to be part of a medical piece- a truss. Here's the ID from the "what is it" forum:

Congrats Doug on your big silver find
We need a break from all of this cold and snowy weather we've been having.
I need to get out and swing soon, it's killing me.
Warm up this coming week, suppose to break freezing after a month or so of snow and ice.
Crazy weather here this year.
Good luck back in the bean field.

Thanks HB. Crazy weather indeed. I've been hitting the soybean fields but no coins. :-\ The yard had yielded 3 rings, a Merc, silver pocketwatch cover, many wheats, etc. I can't seem to find any coins past the 1940's at this place yet. :(
Happy holidays Buddy,
Doug
