Thanksgiving week is one of the few times that my son and I make it a point to get out together on a hunt, last one together was in April!
So first he went to this site that we last visited in April. This is the same site where I got the silver pocket spill (Bust Halves and Spanish) and I resisted going back there again until he got a chance to hunt there at least once without me.
So on Wednesday he went there after having only a half day of work prior to gobble gobble day and I got a nice email in the evening thanking me for "not pounding the snot out of the site". As soon as I read that sentence I knew he did good!

He sent me a group photo of his finds before cleaning, not bad at all, makes Dad feel better about doing so well at that site earlier.

Then I received photos of the 3 coppers he found, he was a happy camper to say the least, I saw the coins Sunday and they even look better in person than on the photos. A 1773 KGIII Halfpenny (Aging George variety) 1775 KGIII Halfpenny (Long neck 3-a variety) and a 1787 Conn copper Miller 33.17-r.1 variety.

So on Sunday we both went to this site and we did get a few more coppers to appear. Dan got 6 buttons, a shoe buckle piece, a working Mini Mag Light and a 1808 Classic Head Large Cent. I started out with a shoe buckle piece, and then after awhile I finally got my first colonial copper using my new detector and it was a 1782 KGIII Irish Halfpenny. Not long after that I got a beautiful deep reading where some hunter on a ATV had been going back and forth on this fall to his tree stand and a beautiful thick copper comes out of the hole. I knew right away it had to be a Liberty Cap Large Cent and once it dried out some the 179 and later 4 were visible, so I have found my 5th 1794 Large Cent!

What surprised me on the hunt was no buttons for me and I was digging everything, sure dug enough buckshot that should have been buttons but not to be. But, I will take the coppers any day if I can't find a good button. One of the buttons my son got was a nicely inscribed Tombac type. It has been awhile since I got a nice one like that. Overall, another good hunt with my son.

And you just keep rolling! Quite a year! :headbang:

For coins yes, for relics, yuck! But the information I gathered on that special button of mine is making up for the lack of good relics this year, we plan on visiting Ft McHenry in the Spring/Summer next year and the battlefield.

Sweet finds! :headbang: I see the date on those coins and think that there was a lot of Revolutionary War events that took place in NJ. Is the place near the site of some of those battles?...PP

Those coppers made your fall season, Don. Where there are shoe buckle pieces popping out, I am swinging with a passion. That site was kind to you and Dan. Thanks for sharing those Colonial artifacts with us.

Kirk :hello:

Those coppers are nice for sure, Don! You and your son are hitting a very special site there. You know there are more hidden secrets waiting to be revealed.

Liberty Cap thicky! Awesome! Irish halfpenny! Sweet!

Great overall hunt, Don!

Nice finds, Don! Your research sure pays off.

He is quite a character and yes, if he was not posting, for the most part it would be boring to some degree. :D But, the forum is an education in Colonial coins and ashame more who detect and find the colonials do not join the forum at minimum to get more educated on our colonials coins, medals and tokens and Steve's adventures!

That's one of my New Year's resolutions! But I might join sooner. Maybe I'll keep Steve company with lots of questions. I have spoke to him through email and seems he's pretty easy going. (Unless his car breaks down LOL) I take it, it is Steve from NJ you're talking about.

Outstanding finds. It looks like a real peaceful place to hunt
