Thanksgiving week is one of the few times that my son and I make it a point to get out together on a hunt, last one together was in April!
So first he went to this site that we last visited in April. This is the same site where I got the silver pocket spill (Bust Halves and Spanish) and I resisted going back there again until he got a chance to hunt there at least once without me.
So on Wednesday he went there after having only a half day of work prior to gobble gobble day and I got a nice email in the evening thanking me for "not pounding the snot out of the site". As soon as I read that sentence I knew he did good!

He sent me a group photo of his finds before cleaning, not bad at all, makes Dad feel better about doing so well at that site earlier.

Then I received photos of the 3 coppers he found, he was a happy camper to say the least, I saw the coins Sunday and they even look better in person than on the photos. A 1773 KGIII Halfpenny (Aging George variety) 1775 KGIII Halfpenny (Long neck 3-a variety) and a 1787 Conn copper Miller 33.17-r.1 variety.

So on Sunday we both went to this site and we did get a few more coppers to appear. Dan got 6 buttons, a shoe buckle piece, a working Mini Mag Light and a 1808 Classic Head Large Cent. I started out with a shoe buckle piece, and then after awhile I finally got my first colonial copper using my new detector and it was a 1782 KGIII Irish Halfpenny. Not long after that I got a beautiful deep reading where some hunter on a ATV had been going back and forth on this fall to his tree stand and a beautiful thick copper comes out of the hole. I knew right away it had to be a Liberty Cap Large Cent and once it dried out some the 179 and later 4 were visible, so I have found my 5th 1794 Large Cent!

What surprised me on the hunt was no buttons for me and I was digging everything, sure dug enough buckshot that should have been buttons but not to be. But, I will take the coppers any day if I can't find a good button. One of the buttons my son got was a nicely inscribed Tombac type. It has been awhile since I got a nice one like that. Overall, another good hunt with my son.

That is a father and son hunt that you will undoubtedly remember for a long time! :icon_thumright:

wow! sweet coppers!

Don,
As always some great stuff. Glad you were able to get out with your son. I can't wait until my son is old enough to join me...at 15 months still a little too soon.

PS I've seen quite a few NJ coppers popping up on here lately.

Hey Don, Incredible finds. Looked at them on C-4. Got my Breen Book today, and with the help of a link sent to me, I wanted to try an ID your variety of 1794. I think I have it at Sheldon-67. Is this correct? HH Todd

I like how you wait in the shadows and then BLAMMO a HUGE POST with mind BLOWING COPPERS....I like that CT

Yes Todd, it is a Sheldon 67. I did have that in my post on C-4 forum by the way. :tongue3:

"Today I got a 1782 KGIII Irish Halfpenny and a 1794 Liberty Cap Large Cent which appears to be a Gardners Head type Sheldon 67."

It was an easy one to ID , thanks to the clarity of that lower curl, that made it a Gardner Head type and only a few of them were in 1794.

Sorry I missed the ID, I just like to look at the pictures anyway :tongue3: :laughing9: I was so excited about receiving my book I wanted to try it out. Can you ID the other 1794 in the forum? Giving me fits.

Ah, most people just look at the pictures unless it is a certain magazine then they just read the stories :laughing7:

I ID'd that for Jim last week, fairly certain I got it right.... http://www.coinfacts.com/large_cent...ents/1794_large_cents/1794_large_cent_s57.htm

What I do is ID it first from Breen and then for showing the person on the forum, if there is a photo of it on coinfacts I will post that link, or from Tom Deck's Large Cent website.

As a side note and I was surprised the C4 guys did not chime in, my son's one copper in this post is a Long Neck and that family I think is not common to America, but I found a 6-a variety last winter and my son has the 3-a variety (easily ID'd by the die break on the Obverse) I have no idea on rarity of these families but was told my 6-a was only the 2nd one reported found in America, for whatever that is worth.

I believe Tom Deck's is the one I'm cross-referencing also. For some reason, when I punch on a coinfacts (sub) variety, there isn't an example shown. Is this just my computer or do I have to be a member, or, they just don't have a pic of that certain variety?

One thing about Tom's site is, a lot of the coins in his photos are worn badly, so I only use it as a backup confirmation site. Coinfacts, works, the S-57 photo is there, you have to scroll down a bit, otherwise you just see a blank page ..

:headbang:
WOW!! Those are some sweet coppers! Looks like a wonderful time you had too!
