Some good advice for a tourist?

Hi all!
My name is Harry and I am from Austria (no good gold there.. )...I plan a trip to Arizona in February/March next year... and the main goal will be GOLD ...aside meeting great people and enjoying this beautiful country of course!
Maybe you guys can give me some good advice...

First of all I will need a detector...In Austria I use the ACE 250 for coin and relic hunting (World War II)...but I am sure the Ace won´t do it on mineralised ground...so I´m thinking about to buy or rent a new one ...GBII or GMT...Does anybody know if it is possible to rent a detector for two or three weeks or should I better buy one?

How are the weather conditions at that time?No problem for nugget hunting...and camping? How about SNAKES in spring time
Is it also possible to pan or sluice in February/March??Water?

But most important of all: Am I allowed to hunt and dig for gold...as a TOURIST?Do I need a permission?
Do YOU need a permission??Or is it okay on public land?And how do you identify public land...sorry for the stupid question...but are claims and private property always marked?

So guys..thats all for the moment...I hope my english isn´t toooo bad and I hope some of you have the time and the heart to give me the one or other helpful answer to make my holiday a (gold) story of success

Harry,

last things first your english is great, better than some high school grads of late. Schools are too busy teaching enviromental and socialist crap to worry about something as mundane as english. As far as permits go unless you are working in an area that specifically requires a permit like maybe a city park or a preserve of some kind you shouldn't have to worry about getting one.

I'm afraid I can't help you on the subjects of weather, where to hunt or rent equiptment, I'm up in the NW corner of Oregon on the Pacific Coast. I can however wish you a pleasent trip to and from the States and hope you have an eventful stay in Arizona.

Hi Harry, Look for snakes in March into the summer months. Stop by a BLM office in the area you are interested in and they can give you a map. You can also use the geocommunicator program to find areas of interest. Use the topo maps.

Also check craigslist.org for used detectors

I am not sure yet where exactly I am going,but the areas around Wickenburg or Prescott could be interesting...?

The areas around Wickenburg and Prescott are very interesting. I've chase the gold in the desert there myself. The fellows I went with found some gorgeous nuggets and specimen gold--big stuff!!

I had a blast. Buy a membership from one of the local clubs and hunt to your heart's content. The area is pretty hammered now, but they're still finding gold.
