Welcome to TN. I also live in Hollywood.

Same questions, ... and how large is it?

Did you find it metal detecting?

Did you clean it?

Are you sure its a scepter?

My first impression is religious medallion, but they usually have back markings. :-\

Hi flight7,

I believe this is a medal of The Virgin Mary holding the heart of Jesus. This depiction of Mary is sometimes used in Yugoslavia, and I'm sure a few other places I am unaware of. A Mexican catholic friend of mine gave me this information. Anyway, it is a beautiful find! :icon_sunny:

I was thinking the same thing. I have been searching for "Mother Mary" items with no avail.
Could that red jewel be a ruby?
Virgin mary though brings back matches! WTG HUNTER!

Hey matees,
thanks everyone for replying. Yes this item was found detecting using excal 1000 in a 4' deep trench
in hollywood fl. It is 2 u.s. quarters high and 1 and a half wide, no inscritions, I dont think the stone is ruby, but cant be sure. I do not think it is the Virgin Mary, as I have never seen her with a scepter.
I'm pretty sure it's solid copper about 1/4" thick. Again no markings and yes I just rinsed it off.
I'm thinking british or spanish. Keep the help coming and if I find anything out I 'll post.
aarg thanks again matees.

Hey matees,
I just got a little spooked, that's actually a chalice. I repeat chalice. Knights templar.
Could be the BVM that's blessed Virgin Mary. Shiver me timbers.

I am keeping my comments to myself; it does look like a chalice and I feel stupid.
But copper should have green corrosion on it if it is that old....shouldn't it? And copper is such a soft metal, the thing should be all beat up....anyway.
I still think it does look like a rough ruby....unless, 'der is real blood in 'der cup, argh!

Something doesnt add up. I am only trying to help. If it is copper, and it doesnt look at all like copper from your pic, it must have been recently lost. Why do you believe it to be copper? I see no green patina. I see no corrosion whatsoever from your pic. I also saw no scepter. It is a large medallion though. Could it be silver?

Ok now I'm not sure if it's copper, it sure looks old, and there should be some green patina like u
say. I gonna take it to a jewler friend from the treasure hunter club and have him test the stone.

On another note, mateys, found more treasure today. Fished a 10kt wedding band 5.7 pennywt
out of the ocean. aargh. I'll post the pic on new finds or water finds.

Keep the help coming on the medal and I let you know what I find out.

That's just gotta be something really old. I'm so very excited for you for finding such a cool item. Can't wait to hear what else you find out.

Cheers!

on the pic showing the back, it kinda looks like it said " Jesus" or something the like at one time. look at the very bottom just above the dark vertical line. its hard to see through the scratches. i also dont think it looks like copper, and would say silver is a better bet.

Hi Flightseven:

First, welcome to TreasureNet. I live in Hollywood, as does BigCypressHunter. Then actual information (?). Santa Barbera would also be depicted holding a cup of red wine in her left hand, and a weapon usually a sword in her right. But I doubt my own idea because your lady looks too peaceful. Barbera is a warrior saint and usually looks pi$$ed off.

It might be interesting to see some more pics. Like from the edge maybe, showing the thickness of the metal. Is the color of the pic correct? I think I see a little corrosion now that I look closer, in the leaves. The pics are very clear. What is that line on the back bottom? Is that a crack? Is there writing? Have you had it tested for silver content? It kinda looks like nickel-silver or a nickel-brass alloy. Was it black before cleaning? It almost looks polished. Are those scratches on the back? Too many questions? lol
