I have not learned how to determine what kind of metal something is. It looks like cast iron to me. It does seem like it is part of a bell. :-\

Will a magnet stick?

Are bells made of brass?

Or bronze, or copper, or zinc, or tin, or pewter. ;D

Not copper, maybe bronze, doesnt look like cast zinc, tin or pewter. It looks like a brittle metal that breaks like cast iron or brass. It has the color of old cast iron but I should have known its not iron- no rust. :)

You know, I have found pieces of this same metal--always just fragments. They seem a bit shiny like tombac, but they aren't tombac. I've never known what they were off of, but they are not all bells. I just can't figure for the life of me what the metal is.

It won't melt, so it isn't pewter.

mostly bells, some are pots (3 legged cauldron type that went in the fire). I agree its a strange metal like tombac but isn't, Ive never found a good ID for the type.

Would love to see it whole. Love the look of the metal, color and style.

Thank you for the information, Crusader. Perhaps one day someone will run across a whole example. The little pieces sound Good on a detector, so a whole one will be found if it is out there.

I agree with these being pieces of some sort of utilitarian item (my vote is more for pots than bells)--because it needed to be something large enough not to lose, but was only thrown out when broken.

Best Wishes,

Buckles

here's a wild one:

if it has an arc then you could set a compass point and spread to where it matches the arc of the item. then draw a big circle with the compass spread.

or am i goofy thinking this is possible. please tell me! :icon_scratch:

No that is not a goofy idea, you could match the arc and then draw the full circle giving you the relative size of the object.
