Sleepy's Most Wanted (Roosevelt Dimes)

After having searched through $7,110 worth of dimes, I figured I'd get a Whitman Coin book (1946-1964 Dimes). I'm going to make it my goal to fill it by the end of the year! To the right is my "Most Wanted" List to help keep track of my progress. I want all of my finds to be from CRHing, so I won't be purchasing any of them. Here goes nothing! :headbang: 1)1955

Congrats Sleepy, down to two! Your projection was right on the money. Hope you hit the jackpot with those last two missing pieces soon.
Funny enough, we both picked up a missing piece this week.

Yeah, going into the week I was almost expecting a Most Wanted find. Worked out pretty well. So you filled a hole, too? That's great! :occasion14: I look forward to reading about it soon.

Congrats all the way around - but especially on the surprise find engraved on that spoon! Best wishes to you, Mrs. Sleepy, and the whole growing Sleepy family!

Thanks, Mega! It's been going pretty well on the coin front, but unfortunately we lost the baby. Only 5 weeks along, so it wasn't too mentally taxing on us. You know me, I'm a stats guy. The numbers say 1 in 4 pregnancies end in miscarriage...so, pretty common occurrence. Right now, we've got a terrific toddler that keeps us busy all day, every day. We'll just have to try again to give her a sibling. It's funny, cause in a way I thought of this pregnancy as a "skunk"...not sure if that's wrong or not, but CRHing and life aren't so different - you just have to push through the "skunks" you get dealt, regardless of what form they take.

HH, :sleepy2:

I'm so sorry for your loss. You are right about how common it is, but that doesn't really make it easier for you. I do admire your attitude and wish you all the best. We're one generation older and enjoying our first grandson, 18 months of pure joy. My wife, retired from teaching science, watches him a few days/week and seeing them together is like seeing Mary Poppins in real life.

Congrats on that 51-S and all the recent dime success. I keep saying, "I give up" after the latest dime skunk box, but then give in to temptation again; now up to a 17 dime box skunk streak. Somebody (The Mastermind) else here recently had a streak of 50 skunks. Recently did some quarters and found my first "W" mint and really enjoyed the artistry of the designs and all the variety. Just returned 20 minutes ago from a windy 5 mile hike along our fossil beach and it was another skunk - but at least that skunk was good exercise.

Been tinkering with my Friday route lately to see if I can get more production out of it. Got 3 more FDRs this week as a result.

Big week for the Most Wanted FDR hunt as we locked up the 51-S behind album plastic! Now, we turn our focus to just two dimes: the 54-S and the 55-D. Something that's happened over the last several weeks is me truly realizing just how incredibly tough it's going to be to find these remaining coins before we move in early April. It's caused me to re-evaluate all my coin suppliers and think of ways to include new, more productive sources. I added a new bank three weeks ago and another new bank this week. This resulted in 4 additional FDRs this week. Time is a valuable resource, so I'll have to look at cutting the banks that give me a hard time to get $100 or less (with little to nothing in finds). Process improvement! Lastly, we had another good week in terms of FDRs found. I've updated my model and it's calling for an improved find date on or around 16 April. Again, past our move date, so we'll still be looking for some luck...

Strange CWR dump today. Much of it was '77-'82 with rims that looked just about brand new, but the faces of many of the coins lacked detail. Almost like it could be a weak strike collector maybe, but not sure...could just be a weird form of wear. :dontknow: I guess I'll run em by the LCS and see what they have to say. Below are a few examples from about $13 that I held back.

Looks like a grease strike error to me...

I lead off tonight with news...I got a phone call from my banker at my dump bank this morning! Apparently, dumping $4-6K per week has raised some red flags during their most recent audit. I decided to just go in there and talk with her. Showed her my dime book. She took a picture of it and sent it to the auditor. My banker assured me that they weren't going to shut me down...just wanted to know where all the coins were coming from. Hoping I can make it the final 10.5 weeks without getting shut down. And now, back to your regularly scheduled program...

Have you encountered questions like this before, Sleepy? This is why I think twice about trying banks again. Just when you get rolling, bam, they pull this crap. So far they say "no problem", but you're right to be skeptical. I hope you make it till April, even if you don't finish the set. Hate to see you get cut off in the 11th hour.

I dread the day this eventually happens to me.. I've only got one pickup bank and one dump bank - the only two for over an hour in any direction. Losing either would be the end of the game. So far they seem perfectly happy to see me, though.

Not much good on the dime front for Friday. I did, however, get talked into some nickel and cent CWRs, which paid off with my second sub-10M Jefferson: the 1949S. Also, the squished cent I found at the coin counter is quite off-center...this "error" could be worth a small fortune! :laughing7:

$6670 (26.68 boxes) - 12 FDRs

Notable: 1949S Jeff Nickel

Total Ag: 0.928 oz

Finished the week just $135 shy of my all-time weekly volume record of $6805. Although we found seven 'D' minted FDRs and five no mint mark FDRs, the projected number of finds needed to fill the next hole ticked up three this week. This is due to another week of no 'S' minted FDRs being found. With seven months of CRHing in :censored: in the books, let's take a look at how the numbers are shaping up for this part of the country:

201906-202001numbers.JPG

% by Mint - Based on actual number of FDR dimes minted from 1946-64.
% Left in Circ - My estimate of how many FDRs are left in circulation taking time into account. (i.e. A 1946S had 18 years to leave circulation before the 1964D was ever minted.)
% Finds - Percentage based on Qty Finds.
Qty Finds - Actual number of finds over past 7 months.

Taking into account that I currently live closer to the Philadelphia mint than I do the Denver or SF mints, the regional bias (or "Geography Factor", as famously theorized by GMan) becomes obvious. About 1 out of every 2 FDRs I currently pull are from the Philadelphia mint. That's going to make it tough to complete the set with now just 10 weeks to go!

Probably going to be in the $4500 area for volume this week due to task saturation. As you can tell, it's not starting out too well. On the foreign side of the house, I'm pretty sure I had zero russian coins coming into the day...now I have a nice little spread thanks to a traveler that was willing to part with their coins.

The skunk forces got aggressive, pushed forward, and hence became vulnerable to a flanking maneuver...we attacked and were rewarded with a Category 1 dime. You gotta push through the skunks, folks! Otherwise, you'll never know what awaits you on the other side...7 FDRs today, hopefully more tomorrow.

Kind of a crazy week in that all my finds occurred during the back half of the week. I'm used to loading up on Tues/Wed and simply getting what I can get on Thurs/Fri. Also, the mint distribution of the 11 FDRs found this week was 3-7-1 (P-D-S), so that pushed the projected number of FDRs needed to fill the next hole down 9 this week! The less Phillies the better at this point! I know I predicted ~ $4500 in volume earlier in the week, but a strong Friday pushed the volume above $5800 for the 4th week in a row. I only broke $5400 twice in 2019! I guess you could say I'm feeling the urgency with now just 9 weeks left in the area. You know what though, all it takes is one roll to make this thing real interesting heading down the stretch...here's hoping!
