I noticed they were tearing out a residential street here in town and along with the street, they decided to pull up the sidewalks on both sides also.
It looked like they might have taken out too much material in the street but the sidewalk area was prime and begging to be hunted. I stopped for about an hour last night to give it a shot and I ended up digging my first confirmed fatty!! Its an indian head dated 1863. I also dug an 1889 and a 1891. After finding those in just an hours time, I knew I needed to get back out there before the sidewalks got replaced soo I stopped tonight after work for a couple of hours working the same sidewalk that I had already started on. It wasnt long before I got another good signal and out popped another indian. A few feet further and I get an identical signal that I was sure was another indian and turned out to be 4 of them stuck together in the same hole. I can make out an 1889 on one of them and 1891 on another. Later on I dug a 1915 buffalo, a chinese cash coin, a pretty neat necklace and a military pin of some sort. I also dug a trade token for a pool hall in hutchinson kansas good for 2 and a half cents in trade. 3 indians yesterday and 7 today gives me 10 total with possibly 9 of them being in the 1800's. The 4 that are stuck together are staying like that for now so I can show them around before I take them apart. Some of these indians need multiple peroxide baths to get the buildup off of them. With a busy weekend ahead, I'm not sure i'll be able to spend much time detecting until sunday but if I do get some free time you know where i'll be!!

That is so cool seeing those 4 IH's all stuck together. I would have a hard time seperating them as I think they look good like that. Nice finds, I keep watching here for sidewalk tearouts . . . one of these days ;D Congrats on a very nice hunt

I agree that they look pretty cool staying the way they are. If i pulled them apart it just wouldnt be the same.
Thanx for the good words!! 8)

Man that's awesome!!! I just learned the other day that they ripped out the sidewalks at my parents house for a 4 block stretch. They stayed uncovered for the entire week!!! Of course I didn't find out until after the new ones were put in... It sucks because my parents house is in their town Historical Society and is the 2nd oldest house in that area!!! So now I will have to wait another 10-20 years till they rip them out again... LOL
I'm gonna wish you the best on forgiving your parents for not saying a thing about the tear-out.
I dont think I could handle such a thing very well myself

I also believe the pennies stuck together to be unique and interesting.

I vote you leave them as is.

The token is beautiful. Do you think there is a Seated Liberty dime there somewhere?
Man.......You just had to bring that up didnt you!!!! I tried my best to keep my mind off of that and now i'm gonna have to go back and hit it again. YES i think theres silver there and NO i dont know why I have not found any yet. I have yet to dig a seated in this town that i'm hunting in and its old enough to have them.

Nice finds Johnny, those indians stuck together are way cool, would that be considered a tribe? ??? I have never got to detect a tear out like that before since I am kinda new to the hobby, but now I got this new Explorer I will be on the lookout for such things!

Jim, this is the first tear out htat I have detected. I have gone down through where they have put in utilities before but never a sidewalk tearout. It was pretty cool finding all the indians and stuff! It will make me keep my eyes open for more!

Absolute proof; Treasure is where you find it!
Great story! Great finds!

Do you think the necklace is gold?

Get back there before I do! :)
GRB
Silver but not gold soo the jewels are most likely just costume stuff but it looks pretty cool and i'm amazed that it came out in one piece!

:o And so how old do you think that necklace is? :o That's a beauty! All those finds are super! Love the token and neat about the Injuns being stuck together, but I'd be about to die to know the dates of the ones in the middle! :D

Its hard to say how old it is Nana. Some areas had more dirt removed than others soo i couldnt tell exactly how deep it was. Its silver and is very pretty when held to light. As far as the indians go, they would be tough to clean anyway and i'm willing to bet on dates between 1888 and 1892.

WTG on your multiple Indian head finds. Get back out there asap while you have time. Keep us posted after the cleaning

That is truley awesome and outstanding! You are probably really happy that you got your goodies for the day and did not waste any time picking out the good targets! I Hope they take a long time so you can go back and hunt the torn up sidewalk again!

Those are some excellent finds.......... keep digging ...we want to see more......

Some kind of military pin?!? WOW! It's a collar pin. 7th Cavalry! Outnumbered by the Indians of course, again.
Is the back flat with a weld spot where the screw back went? Or is the screw back intact?

Man, do I love seeing torn up sidewalks! Out here in Denver, the problem is that they remove, clean, and pour concrete in about 30 seconds. Drives us nuts. Back East in Maryland, where I'm from originally, seems like they would take a week to do any construction, no matter how small an area. Great stuff!

The shank is still intact in great shape. I wasnt sure on the age because of the threaded post. 8)
