Show me your best condition old find/s! I don't care what it is!

Here's a thread where everyone can play. Not like those inconsiderate GW guys.

Either great condition or really good for the age. Post em up!


The gilt crown button is local militia and dates about CW period.

The plain button is French Marines and dates about 1730s-1750s. Usually these have edge loss and no shank. This one is unusually slick as well.

Rare Charleston S.C. maker marked Eyland and Hayden. Tight button and tough to find. Dug at the Battle of Burdens Causeway, Johns Island S.C.

My best condition find would be this NC Cont. Army 16mm cuff button. It came from a homesite on a sandy ridge in NC. Usually my pewter land buttons have edge loss!

I guess I have lots of nice conditioned stuff, but as you know it takes lots of broken stuff first :P

This one sticks out as a true survivor, as it is pewter which in our soil normally comes out pretty bad, specially in a ploughed field.

Leading US expert commented as follows:
'Very nice specimen indeed. It is the pattern used between 1775-84 based on finds in North America. It's possible it was used also as early as 1768 and a few years after 1784. No officer's repousse buttons of the 43rd have been found for this period.'

Outstanding Pewter! is the experts comment saying your button is the first known specimen?

No, I believe the one in the book is as good but was found in the middle of the 19th century (IP has more knowledge on this). There must be a few out there as good as this but probably only a handful. The comment at the end about the repousse buttons, refers to the silver or silver plated versions which the officers wore. My pewter one is for the normal foot soldier. So if anyone gets a silver 43rd it would be the first 'known'.

Yes, you know how much I like that one Its much better in the hand (tiny & hard to show off the lovely stylised dolphin head!) A type that's not in any books (still unpublished), proved by the somewhat wild guess of the UKDFD

I just wanted to show a prime example of the difference between a relic dug in good condition and one in poor condition . Both halfs of this victorian era sash buckle were found in the same marsh on different hunts . They were approximately 12 feet apart ! One is in good to great condition the other is Identifiable but other wise toast ! Nature can be a fickle guardian ! MaineRelic

Remontoir watch. Had a beautiful 1500s axe head i love more, but its still in the cleaning process... or the buckle...very good condition too. Cant decide whats best.
