I would love to see SS & Medicare separated from the "welfare"programs. They are paid for by the people that get them. They are not a free lunch, only grossley missmanaged. Frank

With the current crop of recipients receiving way more than what they put in - way more. So lets call it partial welfare.

Hay, I think you got it wrong. That fund is paying for all that welfare right now. And you have to take into consideration all the interest the fund collected. Frank

Someone like me at my age will never receive even close to what someone like will pay in over a lifetime. Past generations received more than they put in. However I believe most of those are gone now. Its socialism to tax someone for ss and not give them their benifits because they were responsible and saved for retirement. Rewarding irresponsibility is just insane.

It's socialism to have programs like social security and Medicare and prescription drug plan, etc, etc. what do you think socialism is. By definition these are massive socialist programs. I'm not saying they are bad, I'm not saying they are good. I am merely saying that these are socialist programs by definition pure and simple.

And by the way the current generation is taking out way more than they put in. The cost of providing healthcare has grown at double digit rates for decades putting programs like Medicare deep, deep, deep in the red. Throw on top of that Bush's AARP vote buying prescription drug program that no one has paid a penny for and you start to understand why this Connery continues to sink into debt. No conspiracies needed this is simple nonpartisan mathematics that everyone has access to.

These are programs which need to be fix yet no party is willing to do anything about for fear if AARP driven backlash from a good chunk if the population so we just keep kicking the can further down the road instead if doing something to fix it.

Best.

Id actually prefer to "open up a can of whoop a$$" on both political parties and get them to fix this problem!!! Not gonna happen until the AARP says its ok - so I'm not holding my breath. Every generation thinks they are owed, that they've paid in, that its their money, etc etc. and we keep borrowing and borrowing to pay the bills.

Then one bright and sunny day the shi@ will hit the fan we won't be able to borrow and we will head the way if Greece, Italy, Spain, etc. and then everyone will say - how did we ever let it get this bad knowing full well that we all just let it get this bad because no one was willing to step up and take responsibility. So smoke 'em if you got 'em!!

The way I look at it is that SS was a MANDATORY plan with a GUARANTEED return at retirement. The government blew the fund by using it for there personal piggy bank and the raises in payments has in no way kept up with the rate of inflation. The welfare programs are the problem. I go to the store and see those tenderloins going on the governments credit card and it makes me sick. I read about the unemployed getting smart cell phones and it makes me sick. You can't pull welfare goodies out of the SS fund and expect it to last. Frank

If only that was the case. The vast vast vast majority of entitlement spending is in regular check in the mail SS programs and Medicare. I know it would make everyone feel a lot better if it was the freeloaders fault, but unfortunately its not fact. Fact is that the cost of providing the benefits (esp healthcare) went up at a much much quicker rate than they took in money and people life expectancy increased tremendously since SS was created making the payout much much larger than anticipated. SS was NEVER originally intended to be paid to a person for 25, 30 + years as is quite common now a days.

These problems have been known for ever but because of groups like the AARP it is not politically feasible for either party to take steps to fix. For example given the significant increase in life expectancy shouldn't the age at which someone starts to receive benefits?? Seems completely logical, but politically impossible until this country goes broke.

Folks all the facts are right out there, no debate or conspiracy. Only debate is how to fix, only conspiracy is why it hasn't been yet (but we all know the answer to that one).

We all saw the BO healthcare fix. That only expanded the program and the cost. And what few realize, the taxes collected from the healthcare system. Frank

That's right, but don't forget that BUSH added a ton to the free entitlement spree by throwing in HIS prescription drug program. Buying the AARP votes with nice entitlements is a game played by BOTH sides. And both sides are guilty with doing not a damn thing to fix it for decades and decades. Both sides. This is what we call politics people. Doing what is right in the short term to be elected - ignoring any long term harm it might do.
Democrat / republican - both found guilty, guilty, guilty!!

Frank, you hit this one square on! The welfare is the problem!!! These bloodsuckers don't even use food stamps anymore, it's all on a ebt card so nobody in line notices and the freeloaders can load up on those tenderloins and not be ashamed of themselves. They should have a embarasment moment when paying for groceries as incentive to get off their butt and get a job! The left keeps buying votes with continual expansion of welfare programs......jeez it's worked so well we have more on the welfare than ever!!!:BangHead::BangHead::BangHead:Obama even took the work requirement out of welfare recently.....what a shocker!:BangHead::BangHead: He is always on vacation so I guess most of america might as well be!:BangHead:

All obamacare does is keep people on the system and penalize the producers of this country.....

We call this antidotal evidence and while interesting it is completely useless in arriving to a logical conclusion. I think crispin spelled this out in great detail in another post.

People the fact and data are out there breaking this all down - you want graphs, you want pie charts, your call. It might make you feel better but it just is not factual. I'm not sure if you just want to make a political opinion or you are actually looking for factual information? If your looking for facts, I'm more than happy to try and provide. If this is just a political commentary / opinion no problem. We are all entitled to our own opinions but its generally accepted that facts are just facts. Maybe we need to invent the factpinion or the opinact where one can create your own facts to support ones opinions. Maybe something new for the urban dictionary.

[h=1]Morning Bell: Welfare Spending Shattering All-Time Highs[/h]

http://blog.heritage.org/2012/10/18/morning-bell-welfare-spending-shattering-all-time-highs/

It’s been a pretty big year for welfare—and a new report shows welfare is bigger than ever.
The Obama Administration turned a giant spotlight on the welfare system in July when the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) proclaimed it had the authority to gut the work requirements from the welfare reform that had helped lift so many people out of poverty after 1996.
This morning, a new report by the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service (CRS) shows the staggering reality of the growing welfare state—echoing Heritage’s own research that reveals welfare spending is approaching the $1 trillion mark.
Roughly 100 million people—one-third of the U.S. population—receive aid from at least one means-tested welfare program each month. Average benefits come to around $9,000 per recipient. If converted to cash, means-tested welfare spending is more than five times the amount needed to eliminate all poverty in the United States.
Despite the fact that welfare spending was already at record levels when he took office, President Obama has increased federal means-tested welfare spending by more than a third. Benefits under “means-tested” programs are calculated based on a recipient’s means to support himself; in other words, they are intended to assist low-income Americans. The character of this aid is hand-out more than hand-up. Able-bodied recipients rarely are required to work or prepare for work to receive aid.
At the beginning of this year, only four of the 80-plus federal welfare programs had work requirements; the Obama Administration has now suspended the work requirements in two of these. After the Obama Administration suspended the work requirement from the food stampprogram in 2009, the number of people on food stamps doubled.
The more than 80 federal means-tested aid programs provide cash, food, housing, medical care, and social services to low-income people. Here’s how the spending breaks down:

Some might argue that this is a reasonable, temporary response to the recession, but Obama seeks a permanent increase in the size of the welfare state.
According to the President’s budget plans for fiscal year 2013, means-tested welfare will not decline as the recession ends, but will continue to grow rapidly for the next decade. Overall, President Obama plans to spend $12.7 trillion on means-tested welfare over the next decade.
Welfare spending has long passed the amount spent on defense. In 1993, welfare spending exceeded defense spending for the first time since the Great Depression of the 1930s. In subsequent years, the ratio of welfare to defense spending averaged about $1.33 to $1. Obama’s spending plans would inflate this disparity: By 2022, there will be $2.33 in federal and state welfare spending for every $1 spent on national defense.
Needless to say—but we’ll say it anyway—Obama’s big spending plans will result in ruinous and unsustainable budget deficits. These deficits are, in part, the result of dramatic, permanent increases in means-tested welfare. An important step in reducing the federal deficit would be to return welfare spending to pre-recession levels.
Doubling the welfare rolls, handing out benefits without any work requirements, and spending twice as much on welfare as we spend on defense: This is Obama’s new normal.

746 billion for welfare vs 725 billion for ss. Who's the freeloaders again? It isn't those who paid in for years upon years it's all the losers who have paid little to nothing in and receive the bulk of the benefits. Still want to claim the older generations are freeloaders?
