The paperwork has been lost/misplaced somewhere along the way (it has been handed down through the family). We were told it was some sort of shipwreck/pirates treasure. Thought we might try to get it re-certified some how if that is possible...? Any ideas on what exactly it is?

wasn't the Atocha found in the mid 1980's something like 1985 or 1986? Is no one still alive that might be able to give you more information?
Does it matter?

Does anyone know how old the ATOCHA TREASURE COMPANY LLC is?

The link says "1998-2011 Atocha Treasure Company LLC All Rights Reserved"

Here is the address and phone numbers. Also paperwork. http://www.atocha1622.com/Authentic Atocha Coin.htm

Notice it says: "Your Official Authentic Atocha Treasure Coin comes in a blue velvet gift box with a numbered Certificate Of Authenticity from Mel Fisher himself." Mel always knew how to raise money. I believe he passed in 1998.

I believe the Atocha company sells authentic as well as replica coins made from authentic Atocha silver bars. This replica however appears to be a pure gold "Official Treasure Coin Replica". In other words its a 24K fake. Its sold for jewelry purposes only and I dont think the paperwork would help anything but they maybe can "recertify" it...

Its still a pretty piece of jewelry.

only that they said that there was original paperwork that went missing. If they could locate the paperwork....this might be something all together different. I sure don't want to call it anything different then what they were portraying till they show the paperwork they have or can find. We have all seen different kinds of posts on here...some were straight foreword and some were trying to sell something that wasn't. Yes indeed it is beautiful...But paperwork would help with their original question.. because eventually they want to sell it.

Im sorry but I dont understand. :icon_scratch: Are you disagreeing with the ID?
Did you read Realwatchers post? Its not a coin, its a replica jewelry piece from 1998-2011.

Sorry I was going by what the poster told us that it had been handed down through the family. That usually means several generations...not a few years. I know what my eyes tell me....but I was waiting for a response from the poster.
Yes out of curiousity, I would like to hear Barbwiregirls response as well to see if she accepts the research. :icon_thumright:

Re: Shipwreck Gold Coin?? Please Help! SOLVED

Sorry guys, I don't have internet at home. We never knew if it was real or a replica (we were always told it was real)...that is why I wanted to ask some experts and see their opinion. It has been in the family for awhile (will have to ask to see exactly how long). It is kind of a let down that it is a replica :(

Thanks everyone for the advice and/or help on identifying the coin! Guess I will mark this thread as SOLVED!

LOL I think the jeweler said if it was a fake that he would buy it for $380 so we may do that and not have to deal with shipping to a buyer off of ebay and what not.

How do I mark this as Solved btw??

Thanks for responding. :icon_thumright: Some posts just fade away and we never know if the poster is satified with the ID. Realswatcher is very knowlegable and I believe the ID is correct.

If you feel this is solved,

Here is a photo tutorial to help you through that process.

Make sure you get a fair meltdown price because 24K gold is about $1500 an ounce I believe.

6.9 pennyweight (dwt) = 10.73 grams

Here is the Kitco conversion chart http://www.kitco.com/jewelry/dwt-oz-gram.html

I dont know if this changes anything?

I would think 10 grams of pure gold would be worth approx $500. :dontknow: I havent sold any of my gold yet but maybe someone else can help you before you sell. I need to know myself.

At todays prices, how much is 24K gold worth per ounce? :help:

But thanks a bunch for the link. Im going to save it. :icon_thumright: If I minus 2 grams for the bezel, I get $477 for 9.7 grams of 24K. Add $57 bucks for a 2 gram 14K bezel and she should get close to $500 bucks meltdown. Is this correct?

I love that site. Its just what I need. I have a bunch of gold and a ton of silver that I will have to sell because of the economy. Im putting that link on a shortcut on my desktop. Thanks again. I hope silver goes back up.

6.9 DWT is about 10.7 grams,
Ballpark is DWT X 1.5 equals grams.
If you do a lot of conversions there's a free program called 'converber' that works with most any units you need to convert.
Nice looking piece, an Escudo is next on my find list
If you conclude that this is solved, please add the green check.
HH ;D
